Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gilpin Brown? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Gilpin Brown or the rest of Durham, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single call our way will be sufficient: our engineers shall show you what follows from here. Do this straight away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't fire it up — and never believe it when it starts. Here is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of the tank then into just those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Lilac Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting TS19 0, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
  • What was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has started — the three details shape the whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Peugeot 3008 sitting outside Stockton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through the pump was the run in. Call us before you go to collect the vehicle.

We are in car parks like the one outside Monkey Tree a lot, and it's almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the entrance, which determines if a technician can reach you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is pointing. If there's no room to work next to your Ford Kuga, we shift it without the engine. That's not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of your tank toward the pump, and a vehicle shifted twice for a roomier bay is silently a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a worn pump sheds travels on with the fuel. Leave the Volkswagen Touran by St John the Baptist then call us.

Knocking? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfilled Vauxhall Insignia, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Ragworth Community Centre, then leave the restarting alone.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the certain tip you'll get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 close to Primrose Hill Community Centre and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Gilpin Brown

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

The job kicks off at a pump, mostly. Frequently the work wraps up there too. If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that is usually where this drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

Before your motor has started — a forecourt is the single location this ends up caught. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where the car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Take the assistance. Firing it to shift four car lengths isn't.

Gilpin Brown and the areas next to it

Ragworth, Newham Grange, Newtown, Primrose Hill, Stockton Grange — all of them on our trips that carry us over to Gilpin Brown too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places around Durham, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. On a border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Phone to enquire instead of presuming.

This map shows the ground this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground we work on, and none of that needs the car to come to us.

Broken down at the roadside around Gilpin Brown

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in anywhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of Gilpin Square, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Out of the vehicle while it's not safe to sit in it, beside it when it is. Do not start up your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the fuel system. Our van heading to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

under 10 miles from Gilpin Brown, the A1(M) is what matters now. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what we bring.

Our visit in Gilpin Brown, step by step

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • The tank gets cleared completely.
  • Our technicians flush the lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in your system is not what created the trouble.
  • The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • After it's started, our engineers make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Gilpin Brown

Never start it: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Gilpin Brown page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Gilpin Brown

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Gilpin Brown drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Gilpin Brown?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. We attend JET and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn the car back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people expect.
