Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gislingham: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Pause; leave the vehicle off. Drained and purged, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes ahead more than on everything else. Below is the sequence from this point, anywhere in Gislingham you happen to be.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this sequence, and before everything else:

  • Priming the fuel system pulls petrol from your tank toward the parts it harms, and switching the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and your ignition stays off altogether.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.
  • Hazard lights on. If you're at all near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
  • Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. Don't fire it up to move it, however short the way.
  • Keep the receipt. It shows which fuel went in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M11 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 50 miles from Gislingham, and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

Each Gislingham fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Engine not run at all?

  • Just the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where your car stands.
  • This is the best place to be in, and the reason stage one counts.

Motor run, however for a moment?

  • Out of that tank, past the fuel filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far that petrol has travelled.
  • A longer run carries it right through to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.
  • Distance is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling the pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. The parts that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

Gislingham, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A van that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting IP23 8 is the ideal place to start.
  • A road name is a help: Mill Street, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at The Co-operative Food, and it's easy.
  • That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of the vehicle.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Gislingham page.
  • About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and how it was driven.
  • Whose vehicle it is. Some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that is quicker settled before our technicians arrive than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

Waiting for a fuel drain in Gislingham: what to do

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Stick to these.

  • Stay with the vehicle if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
  • Something from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank stays where it is regardless.
  • Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Three queries. What was put in, how much, and if it has run. Those answers shape the job, which is why our price comes after them and not before.
  • Next your tank is cleared, and the contaminated fuel comes out.
  • If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond your tank — so they're cleaned.
  • Cleaned, or swapped if your car has a workable one: the filter is dealt with next.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
  • The first start on clean diesel. When bleeding is complete, the engine is fired up and our technicians make sure that it runs properly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do we leave. Your car returns to normal use right away, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been spotted quickly.

Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Gislingham once more

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — usual driving will do.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle tells you to pull over and call us back.
  • Your documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
