Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Glan-y-llyn? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Glan-y-llyn and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Ring us and our team shall explain what comes next before you try much else.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Flicking the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.
- Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply leaves you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Our team would rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Glan-y-Ffordd, that means hazards on then leave it.
- Keep your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode beginning CF15 7 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
- What was put in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has started — these three replies settle the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left at Taffs Well since first thing? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the trip in that drew weakened diesel through your pump. Phone us before you fetch the vehicle.
Hazards on. Engine off. Phone us. It is twenty to nine by the local primary school, you're late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in your Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, fuel is metered on demand, and a hurried drive asks for plenty of that.
None of it is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the usual Craig yr Allt Common call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it runs through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past gaps, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by The Taff's Well or anywhere at all. Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what's wrong.
Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 by Gwaelod-Y-Garth Village Hall and it will start, which is exactly why the tip sounds reasonable. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.
On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
The job kicks off at a pump, usually. Often enough the work finishes at one too. Still at BP? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.
At a forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your engine never run, and nowhere else does that. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle is.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Very much worth it. Cranking the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Glan-y-llyn plus the villages beside it
Bryncoch, Gwaelod-y-garth, Ty Rhiw, Nantgarw, Taffs Well — every one of these on the rounds that bring us out to Glan-y-llyn as well, a residential suburb.
There are pages for nearly all towns around Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing about whether our technicians come. Call us to enquire rather than presuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your satnav might get wrong.
The area this page includes is on our map. The lot is territory we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.
Kerbside breakdowns in Glan-y-llyn
Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere safe. A normal call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge on Rhiw'r Ddar or in a lay-by with your hazards on.
Remain by the motor while it is sensible to wait in it, but out of it when it isn't. Never restart the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into your fuel system. We'll take the van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled
Here is where your M4 comes in, under 3 miles out of Glan-y-llyn. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

The job around Glan-y-llyn, step by step
- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- That tank is drained of it.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the problem, so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
That has the car ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.
Glan-y-llyn AdBlue removal is a different problem
Do not start it: that opening rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Glan-y-llyn page. Both are ours to deal with.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Glan-y-llyn
Our engineers can't put one price on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Things we get about petrol in diesel around Glan-y-llyn
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Glan-y-llyn?
A large part of this work happens there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. It is fixable much more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Switched off is how the car stays.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
