Petrol in Diesel

Gleadless Townend: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Gleadless Townend and the remainder of South Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Call us so we will tell you what happens next before you do any more.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Briarfield Road, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts S12 2 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, plus if your car has run. These three answers shape your whole job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Darnall perfectly safely. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us while our engineers work isn't required.

Three answers determine much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we get to the car in the car park outside The Red Lion. After that the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and the system bled, our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before you pull away.

Rarely the problem, the place. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from near Allied Snooker Club, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your BMW 5 Series gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of that is in your lines, not the tank.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up close to Gleadless Methodist Church that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position typically get driven once more before anybody calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Ford Kuga is now sitting by Gleadless United Reformed Church. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly rather than an engine giving up. Switch off. Phone us.

Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A big share of the job ends up completed at a pump, as that's where it usually kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

A filling station is the one spot it gets stopped before the engine has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Very much worth it. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Service around Gleadless Townend

The same rounds get us to Charnock Hall, Herdings, Gleadless, Base Green and Gleadless Valley along with Gleadless Townend, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for most places in South Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing whatsoever about if we come. Presuming is the mistake to resist, above all on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles. Phone to ask.

That map marks the ground the page covers. Every bit of it is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside stops around Gleadless Townend

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull in. A common call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge of Norton Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Clear of the car while it's not safe to wait inside, by it if it is. Don't start up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system. However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Driven it already? Stop, and read this

under 5 miles out of Gleadless Townend, the local M1 is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

What we do when we get to you around Gleadless Townend

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled from your tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the issue.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Gleadless Townend?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the issue under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Gleadless Townend has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Gleadless Townend

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Gleadless Townend

I am on a forecourt around Gleadless Townend. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work happens. We visit Asda and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more regularly than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with your car?

That engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more often than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
