Glebe Farm: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Pause, and leave the motor off — not on, and not for a moment to move the car. The next few minutes settle it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run generally amounts to clearing then flushing, on the spot. Here's the order of things from here, anywhere you are around Glebe Farm.

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do the following before anything else, in this sequence.

  • Bleeding your fuel system pulls petrol from the tank towards the parts it damages, and turning the ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So your keys get taken out, and your ignition stays off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mix.
  • Get the car easy to see first — hazards on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • The attendants will usually help you push it away from the pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — not under your engine, even for a couple of yards.
  • The first thing you will be asked is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the till receipt says both. Hold on to it.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M1 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Glebe Farm, and pull over somewhere sensible instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Glebe Farm fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • The petrol remains inside that tank, and only there.
  • Usually it's emptied and rinsed right where the vehicle stands.
  • This is the best place to be in, and the whole reason stage one counts.

If your engine has run, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been drawn from your tank, past the fuel filter and into the lines.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as your injectors get it on a bigger run.
  • The farther it went, the bigger the job — your lines, your filter, and sometimes more besides.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

Glebe Farm, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that goes round.

  • The best place to start is a postcode — one starting MK17 8 — for where you have stopped.
  • A road name is a help: Kenny Ball Avenue, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so say the landmark — like the one outside Tesco Extra.
  • Make and model of your car, and the fact it's a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Glebe Farm page.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — whichever gives us how much.
  • The mileage it did, and how heavily, if it has run at all.
  • The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire or company contracts — so it's faster to settle whose vehicle it is before our engineers get there.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

Glebe Farm fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.

  • Where the vehicle has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the car.
  • A helpful passer-by doesn't start it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.
  • Something from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank stays where it is regardless.
  • Keep your ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

When the van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

  • Three queries. What was put in, how much, and if it's run. Those answers decide this job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.
  • Emptying it's how the mixture gets taken out of that tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank sits in the fuel lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are purged to shift it.
  • The filter is sorted. Cleared, or replaced where the vehicle has a workable one.
  • Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
  • The start-up. With fresh diesel in and the system bled, it is fired up and tested to make sure it runs correctly.

Only once it's running on fresh diesel do our technicians leave. It's very uncommon for a car caught soon to be left with long-term damage, and normal driving resumes straight away.

Glebe Farm, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and ring us back.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, so hold on to the documents.
  • Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
