Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Glen Village? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Glen Village and the rest of Falkirk. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. One call to us will be plenty: our technicians can explain what comes next. Make it straight away.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and never rely on it if it starts. Here is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Glen Crescent, anywhere — an awkward location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning FK1 2 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has been started. The replies settle whatever happens next.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would about double the figure to no purpose. The Skoda Octavia can sit at Falkirk High perfectly well. Ring from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not needed.

The tricky part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Lidl, tell us how much space there is about you and which way round the car is. Those our technicians attend often. Should there be no room to work next to your diesel Nissan Qashqai, it gets shifted with your engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend leaves the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have gradually made a harder job of what was simply a vehicle standing still.

What our technicians will ask is if that drive there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Mercedes C-Class standing in the parking area outside Woodside Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades as it waits, so park the car there overnight and call us in the morning.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Lionthorn Wood Park in that diesel Dacia Duster is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

We rinse the fuel lines instead of only clearing that tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already reached the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked up near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Call us then leave it off.

Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a fair chunk of it finishes. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you are still at Morrisons that's normally where the drain happens.

At the forecourt, it gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages that. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers deal with it where the car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the assistance. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Parts we serve in Glen Village

Hallglen, Woodlands, Callendar Park, Arnothill, Falkirk — each of these on our trips that carry us over to Glen Village as well, a village.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of locations across Falkirk, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Presuming is the habit to skip, particularly on a boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.

That map is the patch this page covers. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Glen Village: broken down where you parked

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over anywhere safe. A routine call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Glenbank or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Okay there? Stay with it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Don't start it up to reach a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. A van heading to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

under 3 miles out of Glen Village, the local M9 is what matters here. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you in Glen Village

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
  • Your tank is cleared of everything.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to drive away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Glen Village AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the fault under it is a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Glen Village has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Glen Village?

What changes the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Glen Village motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Glen Village. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we visit Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Keep the car switched off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Glen Village and across Falkirk.
