Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Glenholt? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Glenholt and the rest of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. One ring our way will be sufficient: our technicians can show you what comes after this. Make this right away.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Plymbridge Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Keep your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts PL6 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has been run. The responses determine all that follows.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is idle, so a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan sitting outside Plymouth this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the run in. Ring us before you set off to collect the vehicle.

Car parks like the one at M&S Simply Food are somewhere our technicians visit often, and the fuel is hardly ever the difficult part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the car is facing. When our engineers can't work next to the diesel Nissan Qashqai we will roll the car without firing it — and that is not fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of that tank and toward your pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a nicer spot has silently turned into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park at The Abbots Way Bar and Grill, the contaminated fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our engineers reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

New locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up by Drama Theatre without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 208 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone notices, and mileage is what determines how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor giving up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven again before somebody rings. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Volvo XC60 now sitting close to University Sports Centre. Switch it off and phone us.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Much of the work starts at a pump, so a large share of that ends up done on site. We work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Tesco that is typically where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can this be caught with the motor still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth it. Shifting the car four spaces doesn't justify cranking it.

Glenholt and the places near it

These same trips carry us to Derriford, Woolwell, Bickleigh Down, Estover and Widewell along with Glenholt, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of locations across Devon, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. Contact us to enquire rather than guessing, above all if you are on the border or somewhere the satnav gets wrong.

Look at our map for the patch covered on this page. All of that is territory our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns in Glenholt

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge on Elmwood Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you stay beside the motor or step clear of it turns on whether sitting there feels safe. Don't start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. However inconvenient the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The M5 is the one that matters now, and runs under 50 miles from Glenholt. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit and switch off. It changes what our engineers bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Where's Glenholt?

Glenholt is a suburban area located inland in Devon, approximately 4.1 miles from Plymouth, and sits at an elevation of 141 metres. Glenholt is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is situated near other local places such as Derriford and Woolwell. Glenholt has a population of around 2869 residents and is part of the wider Plymouth urban area. Glenholt is also relatively distant from London, at 188.6 miles away.

What our engineers do when our technicians reach you around Glenholt

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running properly.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

Glenholt AdBlue removal is a separate job

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Glenholt has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. We cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Glenholt?

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Glenholt

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Glenholt?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's permission we work at Asda and the other forecourts around town all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your car still with you?

The engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers assume.
