Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Glodwick?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Glodwick or the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us before anything else starts, so you will learn what follows after that.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Do not fire it up — and never trust it if it runs. This is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out that fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Glodwick Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts OL4 1, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
  • What got in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has fired — the three answers settle the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where this work mostly starts, and where a good portion of that closes. Still at Shell? Then that's normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can this be caught with the engine still cold. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

The staff will normally help you roll the car out from the pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Starting the car just for four car lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Glodwick

The enquiry we hope for runs like this: diesel Audi A4, a few litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off outside Worldwide Foods. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

You'll be urged to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at Glodwick Infant and Nursery School, a misfilled Ford Focus running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol past your filter on to your pump. Let them moan. Phone us.

Three replies determine most of the work: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we get to your car in the car park at The Bridge Inn. After that the tainted mix comes out of your tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the system bled, we start the car and check it runs smoothly before you pull away.

Your pump sits ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off moves downstream with your fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it is near Jamia Mosque, Dar-ul-Aloom Naqshbandia and Community Welfare Centre.

Purged, not drained — that's what a diesel Mercedes GLC which got as far as Jamia Masjid Azmat E Islam needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into your filter, your lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Glodwick and the areas next to it

Moorhey, Fenny Hill, New Earth, Roundthorn, Townfield — each of them on our trips that take us over to Glodwick itself, a residential suburb.

There are pages for most places around Greater Manchester, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing whatsoever about if we come. Contact us and check instead of presuming, above all if you are on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

That map marks the area this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers cover, and none of it asks your vehicle to move to us.

Stuck on the roadside anywhere in Glodwick?

Not everybody gets a decent spot to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge on Glodwick, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Stay by the vehicle if it's wise to sit inside, but out of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. A technician coming to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

This is where your M60 comes in, under 3 miles away from Glodwick. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. On a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.

Where is Glodwick?

Glodwick is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near several lakes and waterways at an elevation of 207 metres. Glodwick lies approximately 7 miles east of Manchester city centre and is surrounded by other residential areas such as Moorhey and Fenny Hill. Glodwick has a population of around 12273 people and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock. Glodwick is also relatively close to the countryside of the Pennines, while being within easy reach of Manchester's urban amenities.

What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Glodwick

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • We clear the tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Glodwick AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't start the vehicle — but this fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Glodwick page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Glodwick

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Glodwick

I'm on a forecourt in Glodwick. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers attend Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's salvageable much more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
