Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Goodrington? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Goodrington and the rest of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. A single call to us is plenty: we shall show you what comes next. Make that right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Never start it. Turned on anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Switching your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We would much rather get to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Stabb Drive, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
  • Get your location ready before you call. A postcode beginning TQ4 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has fired. These three facts determine your whole job.

Removing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

The job starts at the pump, generally. Quite often it ends on site as well. Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

At a garage, this is stopped with the motor never started, and nowhere else does that. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Goodrington

The tricky part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, mention how much clearance there is around you and which way round your car is. Those we cover regularly. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend exits your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better space have silently made a worse job of what was simply a motor standing still.

Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel Audi A4 will have seemed entirely usual on the way back from White Rock Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Goodrington Village Green, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Mercedes C-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.

Ringing from close to Hookhills & Broadsands Park Community Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself barely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped space than a car a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the BMW 5 Series, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not that tank.

Turn off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — near Goodrington Methodist Church or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

Goodrington plus the towns near it

Broadsands, St Michaels, Galmpton, Waddeton, Yalberton — all of these on the runs that carry us over to Goodrington as well, a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places across Devon, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Contact us and check rather than assuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your phone tends to struggle with.

This map is the patch the page covers. Your car doesn't need to move to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded on the roadside near Goodrington

Not everyone has a chance to pull in anywhere safe. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Gibson Gardens because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Wait by the vehicle if it is safe to sit inside, but clear of it if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A van coming to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull in, and read below

This is where your M5 comes in, under 25 miles away from Goodrington. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to reposition. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Where's Goodrington?

Goodrington is a coastal suburban area in Devon, situated near the towns of Broadsands and Galmpton. Goodrington sits at an elevation of 69 metres, overlooking the sea and surrounded by scenic coastal paths. Goodrington is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its desirable location near the coast. Goodrington is also close to the village of St Michaels, and is within commuting distance of Exeter, the nearest city.

What we do when our technicians reach you around Goodrington

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • We flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it is turned on, our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Goodrington is a separate problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — don't start the car — but this issue is not. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Goodrington has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Goodrington?

We can't put one figure on this page frankly, because this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Goodrington

Fuel drains on a Goodrington petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
