Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Goodyers End?
With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Goodyers End and the remainder of Warwickshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Phone before all else begins, and you'll hear what comes after that.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And once started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
- Switching your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.
- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Hospital Lane? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started engine.
- Before you dial, gather your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts CV12 0 — that is what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been turned over. Your responses decide whatever follows.
Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on a forecourt?
It kicks off at a pump, typically. Often enough the work ends on site as well. If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's typically where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.
Nowhere other than a forecourt can it be stopped with your motor still cold. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys.
The staff will usually help you roll the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces does not merit starting it.
Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Co-op Food now. Time gone by is not the thing we need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.
Twenty to nine. Outside Newdigate Primary and Nursery School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave your ignition alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.
What we will want to know is whether that run there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is least able to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can get past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Ford Kuga standing in the parking area outside The Royal Oak carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens as it stands, so park the vehicle overnight and phone in the morning.
Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is before the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds on with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Peugeot 2008 near St Giles.
Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Renault Captur telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Umbrella Park or anywhere else, and do not restart the vehicle to find a better place.
Coverage around Goodyers End
As a residential suburb, Goodyers End gets a steady visit, whilst the areas close by come along on the same journey: Ash Green and Bedworth Heath, Neals Green and Keresley Newlands, Exhall.
There are pages for most locations across Warwickshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing about if our engineers come. Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Call us and enquire instead of presuming.
This map is the ground the page includes. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory we work on, and none of that requires your car to come to us.
Stopped by the kerb anywhere around Goodyers End?
The chance to pull over somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on M6, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.
Remain with the vehicle while it is sensible to wait in it, yet clear of the car when it isn't. Don't restart it to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the fuel system. However awkward the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
Here is where the local M6 comes in, under a mile from Goodyers End. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

What happens when we arrive with you in Goodyers End
- We establish what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- Away goes the contaminated mixture.
- What is left in the system should not be what caused the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
- The system gets primed, on new diesel.
- The engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
That has it ready to set off. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.
A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Goodyers End
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — but this issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Goodyers End page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Goodyers End pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.
A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Goodyers End
I'm on a forecourt in Goodyers End. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It is fixable much more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.
You, and your car, still together?
Turned off is the way it remains.
Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect.
