Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Goosewell? Don't Start It
If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Goosewell or the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us before anything else begins, so you'll hear what follows after that.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, never believe it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to thin it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Holmwood Avenue, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
- Get your location ready before you ring. A postcode that starts PL9 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, and if the engine has been run. Your answers settle whatever comes after.
Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that high-pressure pump in real volume on the drive in, and the drive back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over your Renault Megane outside Plymouth whilst the work gets done, and we would much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.
Diesel Volkswagen Passat. Some litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Lidl. That's the call we like, as the real question beneath it is about volume through the pump not hours on the clock.
Here's what a job in the car park by The Staddy typically looks like. Our technicians arrive at the car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three answers settle most of the work. Then the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Vauxhall Astra has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our technicians start the car, confirm it runs properly, and you drive away.
Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later. Then call us about the Volvo XC60, the diesel one, near Plymstock War Memorial. Don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it is something we check on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why cars in that position typically get driven a second time before anyone rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Seat Leon is now waiting close to Plymstock Parish Hall. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure fully instead of an engine giving up. Switch off. Ring us.
Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on the forecourt?
A large chunk of the work is completed at the pump, since that is where it mostly begins. We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Asda that is generally where this drain happens.
At the forecourt, it gets stopped with your motor never started, and no place else manages that. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.
Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
Can our technicians cover your corner of Goosewell?
Those same runs bring us to Plymstock, Staddiscombe, Spriddlestone, Hollacombe Hill and Billacombe along with Goosewell, which is a residential suburb.
Not on that list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns around Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Phone and check instead of guessing — borders above all, and wherever your satnav may misread.
The map outlines the patch this page spans. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Goosewell: stranded where you pulled up
Not everybody gets a decent place to pull over. A common call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Goswela Gardens or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.
Whether you wait by the motor or stand away from it depends on if staying nearby feels wise. Do not start it up to reach a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the system. Driving on causes your car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no bother for us.
Driven it already? Stop, and read below
Your M5 is the one which counts here, and it runs under 50 miles from Goosewell. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.
Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring differs.
Goosewell itself
Goosewell is a suburban area located on the coast of Devon, near the city of Plymouth. Goosewell sits at an elevation of 52 metres, overlooking the surrounding coastline. Goosewell is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is situated close to nearby places such as Plymstock and Staddiscombe. Goosewell is approximately 2.9 miles from Plymouth, making it a convenient residential location.
Once our engineers arrive with you in Goosewell: what happens
- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- Out flows the tainted fuel.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the issue.
- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
- The motor is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you're ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.
Goosewell AdBlue removal is a distinct problem
The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.
AdBlue removal around Goosewell has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Goosewell?
One number wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.
Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Goosewell
I'm on a forecourt in Goosewell. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes, and it is where a good portion of this work takes place. We visit Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Never turn your engine on again.
If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
