Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gore Pit

Never start the motor. While the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Gore Pit and the rest of Essex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us before all else starts, so you'll learn what follows next.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And having started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Poppy Lane, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CO5 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how much, plus if the engine has fired. These three details shape the full call-out.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on the forecourt?

The job starts at a forecourt, generally. Frequently the job ends there too. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Esso that's generally where this drain takes place.

Nowhere other than the forecourt can this be halted with your engine still unstarted. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Gore Pit

Any start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that mix out of your tank and towards your pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a roomier space has silently turned into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped. So if our engineers cannot work beside your diesel Renault Megane, we roll it without starting it. None of that is fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Coop Foodstore we work in frequently, and your fuel is rarely the awkward part: the bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the entrance settling if a technician reaches you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way your car faces.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Feering Park call — a diesel Peugeot 208, out there without a murmur and back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was designed about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked your diesel Ford Fiesta up close to Feering Community Centre a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short hop really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has arrived at the fuel filter and the pump — which is why our engineers clean your lines instead of only emptying that tank.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later. Then call us about the Mercedes GLC, the diesel one, close to All Saints, Feering. Don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our technicians work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and the diesel Citroen C4 is parked up near Quaker Meeting House. The motor isn't failing — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours generally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then ring us.

Can our technicians cover your part of Gore Pit?

Feering, Inworth, Newtown, Stocks Green, Kelvedon — each of these on the runs that take us out to Gore Pit itself, a small village.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Essex, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us and ask rather than assuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your satnav may struggle with.

The area the page spans is on this map. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Roadside stops around Gore Pit

The opportunity to pull in somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Lavender Crescent because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of the motor while it's not wise to sit in it, by it if it is. Do not fire it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system. We will send the van to a difficult place without any fuss, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and check below

This is where your M11 counts, under 25 miles from Gore Pit. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the next safe junction then turn off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Gore Pit itself

Gore Pit is a small locality in Essex, situated on the riverside at a relatively low elevation of 33 metres. Gore Pit lies near the city of Colchester, approximately 8 miles away, and is also close to the villages of Feering, Inworth, and Newtown. Gore Pit has a population of around 582 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

What follows when our technicians get to you around Gore Pit

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from your tank.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that created the issue.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • We fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Gore Pit is a distinct matter

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Gore Pit page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Gore Pit

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Gore Pit motorists

Fuel drains on a Gore Pit petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission we attend Shell and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Don't turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists expect.
