Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gorsey Leys? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Gorsey Leys and the rest of Derbyshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Phone and then we shall show you what comes next before you try any more.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start it — and never depend on it when it runs. Here is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just can't run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It is not fine. It is grinding the fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
  • Never water down it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would sooner come to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Stanleigh Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting DE12 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, approximately how much, and whether your car has been turned over. Those replies determine everything that follows.

The drive back would more or less double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf. So leave it where it is. Call us from the platform if that is handier — no one needs you hovering over your car outside Burton-On-Trent while our engineers get it done, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

The difficult part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that decides if our van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Co-op Food, say how much clearance there's about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we visit often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Peugeot 308, it gets shifted with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that mix exits that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have gradually made a bigger job of what was simply a vehicle sitting still.

Try the journey home from The Robin Hood? Don't. It will start and it will drive off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank acts generally whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Audi A3 then phone us.

Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the commonest location we work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from close to Overseal Village Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Citroen C3 gets drained, your filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a misfilled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to Saint Matthew's Church Centre or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better place.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, meaning a fair part of that ends up completed at one. Still at Morrisons? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

The forecourt is the one spot it is spotted before your engine has started. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Well worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Service around Gorsey Leys

Overseal, Spring Cottage, Ashby Woulds, Short Heath, Linton Heath — all of these on the rounds that take us out to Gorsey Leys itself, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Derbyshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Call us to ask rather than presuming, especially if you're on the border or somewhere your phone misreads.

This map shows the area the page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our technicians cover, and none of it requires the vehicle to come to us.

Roadside stops in Gorsey Leys

Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe. A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge of Forest View or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Okay there? Sit with it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Don't fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the fuel system. Our van driving to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the M42 counts, under 5 miles away from Gorsey Leys. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's sensible, stop there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

A little about Gorsey Leys

Gorsey Leys is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 97 metres. Gorsey Leys lies near several small settlements, including Overseal and Ashby Woulds, and is within commuting distance of Lichfield. Gorsey Leys has a population of around 1903 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Gorsey Leys is located 104.5 miles northwest of London, in the East Midlands region.

Once we reach you in Gorsey Leys: what follows

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank gets drained of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

That has your car ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gorsey Leys is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Gorsey Leys page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Gorsey Leys?

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Gorsey Leys drivers

At a petrol station in Gorsey Leys, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We visit Asda and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
