Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Goscote?

With the tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Goscote and the rest of West Midlands, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before anything else begins, so you'll see what happens next.

What to try next about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so never pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Dolphin Close, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Have your position prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning WS3 1 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what got in, about how much, plus whether your car has been run. Your replies shape whatever comes after.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

A fair portion of this work gets finished at the pump, since that's where it usually starts. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Asda that is typically where the drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can this be halted with the motor still untouched. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Rolling it four lengths doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Goscote

The enquiry our engineers like runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off outside Heron Foods. What we are really asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Twenty to nine by Rivers Primary Academy, running late, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a hurried morning drive asks for plenty.

It will fire up. It will drive off quite happily. That's the problem, because a diesel on a diluted tank acts typically whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never chance the journey home from Greenrock Tavern — leave the Audi A4 and ring us.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Black Country Millennium Forest call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it passes through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past clearances, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Blakenall Village Centre or anywhere else, and don't restart the car to find a better location.

Places our team cover around Goscote

Those same rounds carry us to Heath End, Blakenall Heath, Harden, Little Bloxwich and Pelsall Wood as well as Goscote, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns across West Midlands, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. On a boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Ring us to enquire instead of assuming.

This map shows the area this page includes. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Goscote: stranded wherever you pulled up

A chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge on Slacky Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Fine there? Stay beside it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: restart it to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll take the van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that's much better than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull over, then see this

This is where the local M6 comes into it — under 3 miles from Goscote. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not start it to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring alters.

Goscote itself

Goscote is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Tame and close to the cities of Wolverhampton and Walsall. Goscote sits at an elevation of 149 metres, with nearby neighbourhoods including Heath End and Blakenall Heath. Goscote has a population of around 4576 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Goscote is located approximately 109.8 miles northwest of London, near the M6 motorway.

What comes next when our engineers arrive with you in Goscote

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The tank gets cleared completely.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very rare.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Goscote

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Goscote page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Goscote

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Goscote

Fuel drains on a Goscote petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work gets done. We visit Shelfield Service Station and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It is recoverable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
