Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gotham
With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Gotham and the rest of Nottinghamshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. We can tell you what your next step is. Phone — that happens ahead of everything else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Don't crank it — and never depend on it if it fires up. This is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Kegworth Road, turn your hazards on and keep it there.
- A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning NG11 0, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you call.
- Three facts decide the entire call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate measure involved, plus whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at East Midlands Parkway this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked diluted diesel through the pump was the trip in. Call us before you go to collect the vehicle.
If you've put petrol in your diesel BMW 3 Series in Gotham and you're now stranded outside The Co-operative Food with a boot packed with shopping, phone us. Do not fire it up again to exit that spot. Our technicians will get to you, drain the tank, purge the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws little fuel, which is why such jobs are usually the easy ones.
Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Memorial Hall Recreation Ground, it's doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.
The pump sits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a worn one loses passes downstream with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel Ford Kuga where it is close to St Lawrence.
Hire car or company car? Ring them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Insignia close to Gotham Library, and don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
The job starts at a forecourt, generally. Often enough the job wraps up there too. Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.
At a garage, this gets caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages it. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.
Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the offer. Cranking it to shift four car lengths is not.
Coverage in Gotham
Gotham is a rural village, so we get out to the town and to the places near it on the same journeys: Thrumpton, New Kingston, Barton in Fabis, Ratcliffe on Soar and West Leake.
There are pages for most towns around Nottinghamshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Contact us to ask rather than assuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere the satnav can get wrong.
The patch the page covers sits on this map. The lot is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.
Gotham: broken down where you parked
Not everyone has a chance to stop somewhere safe. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge on Curzon Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.
Sit beside your car if it's wise to be inside, and clear of the vehicle if it's not. Do not restart your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. A van coming to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull in, then see this
This is where the M1 comes in — under 5 miles away from Gotham. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.
Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe junction then switch off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what we bring.
A little about Gotham
Gotham is a small village in Nottinghamshire, situated inland at an elevation of 38 metres, approximately 6.6 miles south of Nottingham. Gotham sits near the villages of Thrumpton and Barton in Fabis, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Gotham is located in the East Midlands region, about 104.5 miles north of London.
Our call-out in Gotham, step by step
- The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
- That tank is drained completely.
- What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the problem, so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
- The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
Gotham AdBlue removal is a different matter
The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Gotham page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Gotham
What shifts the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Gotham
Fuel drains on a Gotham petrol station forecourt
Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our technicians attend Total and the other forecourts around town all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more regularly than motorists expect.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is the vehicle still with you?
That engine remains off.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
