Gourock: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Gourock or the remainder of Inverclyde, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us before all else happens, so you'll hear what happens next.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you never believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.
- Do not dilute it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Bath Street? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult place works for us better than a started engine.
- Have your location prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning PA19 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
- Three facts decide the entire visit: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark volume involved, and whether it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
The work starts at the pump, typically. Often enough it ends on site too. The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's consent, that's a spot we work, and routinely.
At a garage, this gets caught with the motor never started, and nowhere else manages that. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys.
The attendants will normally help you roll the car away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Moving it four spaces does not warrant firing the motor.
Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Co-op Food now. Time gone by isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.
A passer-by will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. A misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a hassle; the same motor started three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. Stay put, let everyone moan, and call us.
None of that is the motor failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the normal Gourock Bowling Club call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A3 drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery turns up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.
Rarely the trouble, the place. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Granny Kempock Stone, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Mercedes A-Class gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines purged and fresh fuel put through the full system — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not the tank.
Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel Kia Sportage near Wee Annie. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. Our engineers ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.
Will our technicians reach your end of Gourock?
The same runs take us to Ashton, Cardwell Bay, Coppermine, Trumpethill and Midton besides Gourock, which is a coastal town.
Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Inverclyde, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to enquire.
That map marks the patch this page covers. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.
Kerbside call-outs in Gourock
Not everybody finds a suitable place to pull over. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Kempock Place, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.
Fine right there? Remain by it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will bring the van to an awkward place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
This is where the M8 matters, under 15 miles from Gourock. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.
Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't start the car to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.
Where's Gourock?
Gourock is a coastal town in Inverclyde, situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde, with a population of around 8694 people. Gourock has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of flats, reflecting its urban character. Gourock is located near several smaller communities, including Ashton and Coppermine, and looks out over Cardwell Bay. Gourock sits at a relatively low elevation of 17 metres above sea level, close to the water's edge.
When we arrive with you around Gourock: what follows
- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- That tank gets cleared of everything.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
From there, you're ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
Gourock AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never start it — yet this problem is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Gourock has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Gourock?
Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Gourock drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
At a petrol station around Gourock, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more frequently than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Is the car still with you?
Never turn it back on.
Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
