Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Goverseth

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Goverseth and the rest of Cornwall. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us before everything else happens, and you'll hear what follows after that.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and do not rely on it when it runs. Here is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just won't run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away just fine for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Fortescue Close, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode beginning PL26 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has fired — those three facts decide your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The trip in is what drew weakened diesel through your pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside St Austell all day, waits dormant in your tank whilst it waits. Call us first — before your keys turn.

Put diesel in a petrol car and generally it won't run, so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be providing. That's the trap, and it is why the diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed perfectly ordinary coming back from Foxhole Learning Academy. They always do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing alerts you. Phone with roughly how far you went, and how hard; the second answer counts more than the first.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through, and petrol weakens it. That's the full process, and it explains the usual Tregargus Valley call: a diesel Mercedes E-Class that travelled out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your wrongly fuelled BMW 5 Series, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly close to Lanjeth & High Street Memorial Hall, then leave the restarting alone.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not your engine giving up — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position typically get driven once more before anyone calls. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Ford Kuga now waiting close to St Stephen Community Centre & Social Club. Turn it off then phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Goverseth

On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The work kicks off at a pump, typically. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere else except a garage can the mistake be halted with your engine still untouched. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the lines along with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we sort it out where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Well worth it. Cranking the car for four car lengths? Don't.

Coverage near Goverseth

Foxhole, Goonabarn, Carpalla, Nanpean, Goonamarris — each of those on our trips that bring us out to Goverseth itself, a village.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all places around Cornwall, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to skip, above all on a boundary or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Contact us and ask.

This map marks the patch this page covers. All of it is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stranded at the kerbside somewhere around Goverseth?

A chance to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge beside Goverseth Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Never restart the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Run it already? Stop, and see this

Here is where the M5 comes in — over 50 miles away from Goverseth. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

Goverseth itself

Goverseth is a small village situated on the banks of a river in Cornwall, with a mix of terraced housing and surrounded by rolling hills. Goverseth sits at an elevation of 204 metres, providing scenic views of the surrounding countryside. Goverseth is located near several other small villages, including Foxhole, Goonabarn, and Carpalla, and is approximately 10.7 miles from the city of Truro. Goverseth has a population of around 1253 residents, who enjoy the peaceful riverside setting.

Our job around Goverseth, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our technicians clear that tank of the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Goverseth?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Goverseth page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Goverseth costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Goverseth motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Goverseth, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like EG On the Go is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
