Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Grange Villa?

Never start your engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Grange Villa and the remainder of Durham, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. We shall explain what the following step will be. Call us — this happens before anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Do not start the car. Fired up regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally can't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would much rather travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Newbridge Banks, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Our van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning DH2 3, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how many litres, and if your car has started. These three answers settle the entire job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would close to double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Chester-Le-Street perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if quicker; standing over us whilst our technicians work isn't needed.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at The Co-operative Food now. Time gone by isn't the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and pulls away perfectly well. Chance the trip home from The Moorings? Not a chance. Phone us and leave the Audi A4 where it sits.

Normal on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how the trip to Roseberry Grange Golf Club went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the precision components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Mercedes C-Class travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then ring us.

Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near West Pelton Methodist Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Fiesta gets emptied, your filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the full circuit — because by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Grange Villa

Clearing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

It kicks off at the pump, usually. Frequently it ends there as well. If you're still at the forecourt at Durham Fuel Centre, that's typically where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

A filling station is the only spot the mistake is spotted before your motor has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

The staff will generally happily push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Service around Grange Villa

Grange Villa is a village, and our technicians head out to it and to anywhere around it on the same trips: West Pelton, Newfield, High Handenhold, Beamish and Pelton Fell.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places across Durham, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Phone and check instead of assuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere a satnav might struggle with.

This map is the patch this page includes. Your vehicle never needs to move to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Grange Villa: broken down where you pulled up

Not everyone has the chance to stop somewhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge on Front Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Remain with the motor while it is safe to sit in it, but clear of the car when it is not. Do not start it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system. A van coming to an inconvenient location is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull over, then see below

This is where the local A1(M) counts, under 3 miles out of Grange Villa. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. It affects what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Grange Villa itself

Grange Villa is a small village in County Durham, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 98 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Grange Villa lies close to the city of Durham, approximately 6 miles away, and is near other local places such as West Pelton and Newfield. Grange Villa has a population of around 673 residents and is located in the North East region of England, about 240 miles north of London. Grange Villa is part of a wider network of communities along the river, with High Handenhold also nearby.

What comes next when our engineers reach you in Grange Villa

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled from the tank.
  • What is left in your system should not be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Grange Villa is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this fault under it is a distinct one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal in Grange Villa has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Grange Villa

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Grange Villa

I'm on a forecourt around Grange Villa. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
