Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Great Barrow? Don't Start It

Don't fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Great Barrow and the rest of Cheshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers will explain what your next move is. Ring us — it happens before anything else.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the car. Fired up all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It is not okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which carries the petrol out of the tank and into just those components.
  • Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Village Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your position prepared before you ring. A postcode starting CH3 7 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.
  • What got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has started — the three facts settle the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't drive it home. The drive in has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane, and the trip back would more or less double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that is handier. Our technicians never need you standing over the vehicle at Mouldsworth whilst our engineers work, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

We're in car parks like the one at Co-op Food a lot, and it's hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the entrance, which determines if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is pointing. If there's no room to work next to your BMW 3 Series, our engineers roll it without the motor. That's not fussiness over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards your pump, and a motor moved twice for a better spot is gradually a worse job than one nobody touched.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at your car in the car park at The White Horse. Then the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, your lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system bled, our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before you set off.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra left by Barrow Village Hall scarcely two streets on. Call us, and leave the car off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines instead of only emptying your tank.

Someone certain will tell you to drain it then put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volkswagen Touran by Barrowmore Community Social Club and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is draw it back through your pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Ring us. Your system gets rinsed, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired car from one that merely starts.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work mostly begins, and where a large part of that closes. Still at BP? Then that is generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

A filling station is the single setting it gets stopped before the motor has started. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines along with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the help. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Coverage in Great Barrow

Great Barrow is a village, and our vans head out to it and to the places around it on the same journeys: Stamford Bridge, Barrowmore Estate, Broomhill, Hollowmoor Heath and Little Barrow.

Our engineers still come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Cheshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us to ask rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

That map shows the ground this page spans. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

Great Barrow: broken down wherever you stopped

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over anywhere suitable. A routine call for us instead of a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge beside Main Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of the car while it's not sensible to wait inside, beside it if it is. Do not fire up your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system. We'll send our van to a tricky location without any bother, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved

The local M53 is the road which counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Great Barrow. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are typically lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Come off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and don't restart the car to reposition. On a longer trip — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

A bit about Great Barrow

Great Barrow is a village in Cheshire, situated on the riverside near Chester, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Great Barrow sits at a relatively low elevation of 28 metres, close to the nearby Barrowmore Estate and Broomhill. Great Barrow is located near several notable places, including Stamford Bridge, and is within a short distance of the city of Chester. Great Barrow has a population of around 595 people, making it a small but distinct community in the area.

When our engineers arrive with you in Great Barrow: what follows

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what is left in the fuel system isn't what created the problem.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It's fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

After that it is ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Great Barrow

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Great Barrow has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Great Barrow?

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Great Barrow drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Great Barrow?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people assume.
