Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Great Berry

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Great Berry and the remainder of Essex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. A single ring to us will be enough: our technicians can tell you what comes next. Do this right away.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And once started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Nightingales? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward place works for us better than a started motor.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts SS16 6 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has fired. Those three details determine the whole job.

The trip in is what pulled thinned diesel through your pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Laindon all day, rests harmless in the tank while it waits. Call us first — before the keys go in.

How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our engineers like runs like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off outside Tesco.

Someone will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags at Merrylands Primary School is an inconvenience; the same vehicle started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into the pump. Leave it, let everyone grumble, then phone us.

You drive off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on clean diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park by Hungry Horse, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. Everything begins with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up by St John, Great Berry that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A large portion of the job gets completed at a pump, since that is where it often kicks off. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, so if you're still at Tesco that's typically where this drain gets done.

A filling station is the single location the mistake can be stopped before your engine has started. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Move it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not warrant starting the engine.

Service around Great Berry

As a residential suburb, Great Berry has a steady visit, while its neighbours close by go with it on that same run: Southfields and Laindon, Langdon Hills and Steeple View, Westley Heights.

There are separate pages for most places in Essex, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing about whether our technicians come. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Ring us and enquire.

The map outlines the area the page includes. Every bit of that is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.

Great Berry: stuck wherever you stopped

Some people find no sensible spot to pull over at all. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Kenton Way as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you wait beside the motor or step clear of it rests on whether sitting in it looks wise. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the system with every mile covered. However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Your M25 is the one which counts here, and it runs under 10 miles from Great Berry. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never start it to move it. Long run? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

A bit about Great Berry

Great Berry lies in a relatively low-lying area, with an elevation of around 50 metres, and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. The call-out around Great Berry, step by step

  • Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that started the issue.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and prime your system.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Great Berry

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this problem under it is a separate one altogether. Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Great Berry has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Great Berry?

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Great Berry motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Great Berry?

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Total is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more often than motorists expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Never turn the car back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let it remain that way. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers assume, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
