Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Great Broughton?

Do not fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not run, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over Great Broughton and the remainder of Cumbria, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers shall explain what your next stage is. Contact us — this happens ahead of anything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the car's ignition be as well. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so never tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on West End? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting CA13 0 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and whether your car has run — these three facts shape the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of this work begins at a pump, so a big part of that ends up done there. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Essex Garage that's typically where the drain happens.

At the forecourt, the mistake is halted with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.

The staff will generally happily roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Great Broughton

We are in car parks like the one at Aldi often, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height barrier at the entrance, which determines if a technician gets to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there's no space to work alongside your Skoda Octavia, our technicians move it without your engine. That's not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards your pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a roomier bay is silently a harder job than one nobody touched.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through your filter then into the pump. So a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags at Broughton Primary School is an inconvenience, while the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Someone will urge you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Leave it, let people grumble, then phone us.

It will fire up. It will move off just fine. That is the problem, because a diesel on a weakened tank behaves normally whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never try the drive home from Brewery House — leave the Peugeot 308 then call us.

Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Coalpit Plantation, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Nissan Qashqai covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of the fuel injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses onward with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Ford Focus near Christ Church.

Do our technicians reach your part of Great Broughton?

These same rounds carry us to Little Broughton, Broughton Cross, Brigham, Nepgill and Bridgefoot along with Great Broughton, which is a village.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of towns around Cumbria have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Ring us and enquire rather than assuming, particularly when you're on a border or somewhere the satnav misreads.

The area the page includes sits on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of that asks your car to travel to us.

Kerbside breakdowns in Great Broughton

Not everybody has a decent spot to pull in. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge on Moor Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Whether you remain with the car or step clear of it turns on if being in it is sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local Southwaite Services Northbound is the one that matters here, and it runs under 25 miles from Great Broughton. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are typically lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Pull off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't restart the car to reposition. It changes what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Great Broughton itself

Great Broughton is a village situated on the banks of the River Derwent in Cumbria, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Great Broughton lies at an elevation of 58 metres, close to the nearby villages of Little Broughton and Brigham. Great Broughton is located near the town of Broughton Cross and is approximately 25 miles from the city of Carlisle. Great Broughton has a population of around 1217 residents.

What comes next when our technicians get to you around Great Broughton

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Great Broughton is a distinct matter

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Great Broughton page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Great Broughton?

One number would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Great Broughton drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Great Broughton?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Oakhurst Petrol Station is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. It's recoverable a lot more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
