Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Great Burgh? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Great Burgh and the remainder of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us before all else starts, so you'll know what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Never fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: switching it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so do not tip diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Great Tattenhams, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning KT18 5, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run. The answers settle all that follows.

The drive back would about double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane. So leave the vehicle where it stands. Phone us from the platform if that's easier — nobody needs you hovering over the vehicle at Tattenham Corner while our technicians get it done, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at The Co-operative Food. That's the phone call our technicians hope for, as the point beneath it's about amount through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

Twenty to nine outside Shawley Community Primary Academy & Nursery, running late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia feels like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a hurried morning run demands plenty.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Epsom Downs in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Mercedes E-Class by The Mound. You'll not know how full the tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. Our technicians ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Great Burgh

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on the forecourt?

The work starts at a forecourt, typically. Regularly it ends at one as well. If you're still on the forecourt at Texaco, that is generally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets halted with your engine never run, and nowhere else manages that. We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the offer. Starting the car to roll four car lengths is not.

Parts our team reach around Great Burgh

Epsom Downs, Woodcote, Burgh Heath, Langley Vale, Nork — every one of these on our journeys that take us over to Great Burgh as well, a rural village.

We still come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations in Surrey, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the habit to avoid, particularly on the boundary or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Ring us and check.

See the map for the area covered here. The lot is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Great Burgh: stranded wherever you parked

The chance to stop somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. A common call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Tattenham Crescent or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you remain with the car or move clear of it rests on whether sitting there feels safe. Never restart the motor to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into the system. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to an awkward location, and that's no trouble for us.

Run it already? Pull in, then see this

The local M25 is the road that counts now, and it lies under 3 miles from Great Burgh. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to reposition. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

Where's Great Burgh?

Great Burgh is a village in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of 157 metres, approximately 14.5 miles from London. Great Burgh lies near several notable locations, including Epsom Downs and Burgh Heath, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Great Burgh is a relatively small community, with a population of around 2290 residents, and is close to the nearby city of Westminster.

What follows when our engineers get to you in Great Burgh

  • The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • The tank is cleared of it.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Great Burgh?

The issue isn't the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Great Burgh page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Great Burgh costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel questions from Great Burgh drivers

I'm on a forecourt around Great Burgh. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at Asda and the other forecourts locally all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers expect.
