Petrol in Diesel

Greave: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Greave or the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. We shall explain what the next part will be. Call us — this goes ahead of everything else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And once started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Werneth Low Road, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • Our van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts SK6 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and also if your car has fired — the three facts decide the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Never run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through your high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the way back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat at Woodley while the work goes on, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

Twenty to nine by Greave Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone. Three miles in the Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — while a rushed morning dash asks for plenty.

What our technicians will ask is whether that trip there was short and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and what won't burn can get past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Audi A4 parked in the car park at Foresters Arms holding a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens while it sits, so park the car overnight then call us next morning.

Our engineers clean your lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up by Woodley Cricket Club a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that is a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong. Do not start the car to find a better spot — switch off where you have stopped, close to Romiley Cricket Club or anywhere else.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a big part of that finishes. Still at Esso? Then that's generally where it happens. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still unrun. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where the car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Very much worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not merit cranking the motor.

Coverage around Greave

These same trips take us to Lane Ends, Top-o-th Hill, Woodley, Werneth Low and Romiley besides Greave, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of places across Greater Manchester, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the habit to avoid, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav fails. Phone to enquire.

The patch the page covers is on our map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians cover, and none of that needs your car to move to us.

Greave: stuck where you stopped

Some people have no sensible spot to pull in whatsoever. A common call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Werneth Road or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Okay where you are? Stay by it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. Do not fire it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the system. A van driving to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

under 3 miles out of Greave, the M60 is what counts now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is safe, pull up there, and do not restart the car to move it. Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

A little about Greave

Greave is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated approximately 7.7 miles from Manchester city centre. Greave sits at an elevation of 161 metres, in a region of gently sloping land near the Peak District National Park. Greave is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby neighbourhoods including Lane Ends and Woodley. Greave is also close to other local areas such as Top-o-th Hill.

Our visit around Greave, step by step

  • We find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Your tank gets drained of it.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what started the problem, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.
  • We pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • After it's started, we make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Greave AdBlue removal is a different matter

Don't start it: that opening instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Greave has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Greave

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Greave

At a petrol station around Greave, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent we work at Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Don't switch the car back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
