Green Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never fire up the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Green Hill and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us and our team can tell you what comes next before you attempt anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That is why you don't start the vehicle, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: turning it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- Never put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Market Street, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning WF9 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
- Three answers settle the entire visit: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and whether it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Removing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Plenty of this work starts at a pump, so a fair chunk of it ends up finished on site. If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's generally where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.
The forecourt is the single setting the mistake is halted before your engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key.
Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth doing. Starting it to move four vehicle lengths isn't.
The awkward part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides if our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Tesco, say how much space there is about you and which way round the car is. Those our technicians visit often. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets rolled with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mixture exits your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer spot have silently made a harder job of what was just a motor sitting still.
Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely usual on the way back from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. They always do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about. Call us with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.
What we'll ask is if that drive there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and whatever won't burn can work past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area by The Kings Head with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades whilst it waits, and so park the vehicle there overnight then phone us first thing.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the precision parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Nissan Qashqai drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how that drive to Victoria Park and Play area went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.
Your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it near Hemsworth War Memorial needs the circuit purged rather than emptied.
Places our vans serve in Green Hill
Green Hill is a residential suburb, and so our team go out to the town and to the places around it on those same runs: Cross Hill, Hemsworth, Highfield, Little Hemsworth and Common End.
We still come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations across West Yorkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Contact us to ask.
The ground this page spans sits on the map. The vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Green Hill: broken down wherever you parked
Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge on The Precinct, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Out of the car while it's not wise to sit in it, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However inconvenient the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
Your A1(M) is the one which counts now, and runs under 10 miles from Green Hill. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.
Pull off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't start it to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.
Where's Green Hill?
Green Hill is a suburban area situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with an elevation of 61 metres. Green Hill lies approximately 7.7 miles from Wakefield and 154.3 miles from London, placing it in a commuter belt with access to major cities. Green Hill is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock and proximity to nearby places such as Cross Hill and Hemsworth. Green Hill forms part of the larger urban landscape of West Yorkshire, with the River Calder flowing nearby.
The visit in Green Hill, step by step
- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- Away comes the polluted fuel.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the issue.
- Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running correctly.
Then it is ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Green Hill
If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not start the car — but this fault isn't. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Both are ours. There is a separate Green Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Green Hill
What moves the figure is set out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.
Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Green Hill
Fuel drains on a Green Hill petrol station forecourt
Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
You, and your car, still together?
Turned off is the way it stays.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
