What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Green Side
Not for a second, and not to move it: the motor remains off. Pause there. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and no other factor decides that as much as these next few minutes do. What follows is the order from this point, anywhere in Green Side you are.
Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one
In this order, and before anything else:
- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms.
- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.
- Make your car simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere near you.
- By hand, not under the engine: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you roll, however short the distance.
- The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and your receipt says both. Keep it.
Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M606 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Green Side, and pull over somewhere sensible instead of pressing on to the services. Then begin at step one.
Green Side fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?
Everything after this stage rests on one answer.
If it has never been started:
- That petrol is still in the tank and nowhere else.
- Where the vehicle stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.
- Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it is the best position to be in.
If it has been started, even for a moment:
- Some petrol has left that tank already, gone through the filter, and got into your lines.
- Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
- The job grows with the distance — lines rinsed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.
The line falls there since diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. In that tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing. The components that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.
Green Side, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call
Whether the technician circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.
- BD8 9 and the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.
- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Duncombe Road, or wherever you have pulled up.
- Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, like the one at Asda.
- The car. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Green Side page.
- The quantity: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
- Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and how it was driven.
- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it is faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.
Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works as well.
The wait for a Green Side fuel drain, and what to do in it
Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.
- Stay with the vehicle if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.
- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out once more.
- A home-made drain misses your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.
- Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.
Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time
- First, three questions: which fuel got in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies decide the job, so our price follows them.
- Then your tank is cleared, so the contaminated fuel comes out.
- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in the lines once it ran, and the fuel lines are rinsed to clear it.
- The filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where the car has a serviceable one.
- Priming comes once fresh diesel is in.
- Starting up. When your system is primed with fresh diesel, our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly.
Till it runs on clean diesel, our technicians stay with it. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed quickly, so your car can go right back to normal driving.
Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Green Side again
- Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.
- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop and ring us a second time.
- The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.
- Next time, go by the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
