Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Greenbank? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Greenbank and the rest of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us so we shall show you what follows after that before you attempt any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on A559? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting CW8 4, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, about how much, and if the motor has been turned over. Those responses determine everything that happens next.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this work often begins, and where a good portion of it closes. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at BP that's usually where the drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one location the mistake can be halted before the engine has run. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

The attendants will generally help you wheel it away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Starting the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Greenbank

If you have put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia in Greenbank and you are now stuck outside Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, ring us. Don't fire it up once more to leave the space. We will come to you, clear that tank, purge those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle uses hardly any fuel, which is why those tend to be the straightforward cases.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. The Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Winnington Park Community Primary and Nursery School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

The parts that should be getting protected are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and pulls away just fine. Try the journey home from The Greenbank Hotel? Not a chance. Call us then leave the Ford Focus where it is.

The pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Winnington Park Rugby Football Club, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your misfuelled BMW 1 Series, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Greenbank Community Hub, and leave the restarting alone.

Service near Greenbank

Hartfordbeach, Hartford, Winnington, Kingsmead, Leftwich — every one of those on our trips that take us across to Greenbank too, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations across Cheshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing about if our technicians come. Call us and check rather than guessing — county lines especially, and wherever your phone may struggle with.

Look at our map for the patch included on this page. We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car never needs to travel to us.

Stuck by the roadside in Greenbank

Some people get no safe place to pull in whatsoever. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Chester Road or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Sit beside your car while it is sensible to sit in it, and out of the car when it isn't. Don't start it up to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the system. However difficult the location, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and read below

The M6 is the one that matters here, and sits under 10 miles from Greenbank. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and never start it to move it. It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Greenbank

Greenbank is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated inland at an elevation of 41 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Greenbank lies approximately 15 miles from Chester and is surrounded by nearby places such as Hartfordbeach, Hartford, and Winnington. Greenbank is home to around 3455 residents and is part of the wider North West region of England. Greenbank is located a significant distance from London, at around 157 miles away.

What we do when our technicians get to you around Greenbank

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out comes the polluted mixture.
  • Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running correctly.

That has the car ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Greenbank AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

Don't crank it: that opening step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Greenbank page. Both are ours to handle.

Greenbank costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Greenbank

At a petrol station in Greenbank, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different problem. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers fear.
