Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Greenfields?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Greenfields and the remainder of Shropshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us before anything else begins, and you will know what follows from there.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you never crank it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: switching it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Percy Street, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
  • A van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting SY1 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how many litres, and whether the car has run. These three replies decide your whole job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Passat can sit at Shrewsbury perfectly happily. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us while our technicians work is not necessary.

It will start. It will pull away quite happily. That's the trouble, as a diesel on a diluted tank runs generally whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never risk the drive home from The Dolphin — leave the Nissan Qashqai then ring us.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Greenfields Recreation Ground, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

We flush the fuel lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up close to Greenfields Church a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven again before anyone rings. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Mercedes A-Class now waiting close to The Mill Exhibition. Switch the vehicle off then ring us.

Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

It begins at a forecourt, mostly. Often enough the job ends on site as well. The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and often.

Nowhere except the forecourt can it be stopped with the motor still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

Greenfields and the places beside it

The same journeys bring us to Spring Gardens, Coton Hill, Castlefields, Gravelhill and Ditherington as well as Greenfields, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places in Shropshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Contact us to ask instead of presuming, especially when you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.

The patch this page spans appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians serve, and none of it requires your car to come to us.

Roadside breakdowns around Greenfields

A chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge on Falstaff Street or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Sit by the car if it is safe to be inside, but out of the car if it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult place, and that is no bother for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 10 miles out of Greenfields, the M54 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Where is Greenfields?

Greenfields is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 54 metres. Greenfields lies near several other residential neighbourhoods, including Spring Gardens, Coton Hill, and Castlefields. Greenfields has a population of approximately 6740 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Greenfields is located near the city of Wrexham, which is 24.9 miles away, and is also within commuting distance of larger urban areas, given its proximity to major transport links.

Once our engineers get to you around Greenfields: what we do

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • When it's fired up, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Greenfields is a distinct job

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Greenfields has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Greenfields?

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Greenfields

Fuel drains on a Greenfields petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave it turned off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more often than motorists assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
