Greenmeadow: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: the engine remains off. Pause there. Cleared then rinsed, right where it sits: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead more than on anything else. Below is the order from here, wherever around Greenmeadow you happen to be.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following in order, before you do anything else.

  • The keys out of the ignition. Switching the ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank towards the components it damages. Keep the car off completely.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same blend.
  • Visibility comes before the rest near moving traffic: switch your hazards on, and only then think about everything else.
  • Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the pump. Do not start the vehicle to move it, however short the distance.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt answers that, and that is where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M4, under 5 miles from Greenmeadow, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one starts after that.

The fork in each Greenmeadow fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

If it has never been started:

  • Nowhere but that tank: that's where that petrol yet is.
  • The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle is.
  • This is the best case — which is the entire point of stage one.

If it has been started, even for a second:

  • Some petrol has left your tank already, passed through the fuel filter, and reached the lines.
  • A longer run takes it right through to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.
  • Lines flushed, the fuel filter seen to, and sometimes more: this job expands as the miles does.

The line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. In your tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm. Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Greenmeadow

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

  • Where you are. A postcode starting SN25 3 is the best start.
  • Name the road — Hamble Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Morrisons, for example — and it's much easier to find.
  • Say what the car is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Greenmeadow, and so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever tells us how much.
  • The distance it covered, and how hard, if it has run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for this work, and sorting it before our engineers arrive is quicker than afterwards.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Email works too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.

Greenmeadow fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

  • Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.
  • Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.
  • No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of that takes the petrol back out.
  • No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.
  • Leave the ignition off — your windows and the radio too.

The fuel drain, step by step, after the van arrives

  • First, three queries: which fuel got in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers decide the job, so the price follows them.
  • Your tank is drained. The contaminated blend comes out of your tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank travels in the lines once it ran, and the lines are rinsed to clear it.
  • The fuel filter is sorted. Cleared, or changed where your car has a workable one.
  • Your system is primed with clean diesel.
  • First start on clean diesel. When priming is complete, the engine is started and our technicians confirm that it runs properly.

Till it runs on fresh diesel, we remain with it. When it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare, and your car returns to normal use straight away.

After the fuel drain: back on the road around Greenmeadow

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop and call us a second time.
  • The paperwork answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
  • Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
