Petrol in Diesel

Gullane: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't start the engine. If the petrol is still in that tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Gullane and the rest of East Lothian, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. One ring our way will be enough: our engineers can show you what follows next. Make that right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never fire it up — and never trust it if it starts. This is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Main Street, anywhere — an awkward spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning EH31 2 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
  • What went in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has run — these three replies settle the whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Don't drive it home. The drive in has already put a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Renault Megane, and the trip back would roughly double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that's easier. Our technicians do not need you hovering over your car at Drem whilst we get on, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Aldi now. Time elapsed is not the thing we need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

Your Nissan Qashqai stays where it is in the car park at the pub in the village for the whole job, which normally goes like this. First our engineers ask what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since, because most of the work turns on those replies. That tank is emptied of the tainted mixture, the lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and the system primed, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it's running correctly you drive away.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — by Gullane Parish Church or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfilled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and the diesel Ford Kuga is parked up near St Andrew's Kirk. Your engine isn't giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours typically get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Gullane

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work begins at a forecourt, meaning a large share of that ends up finished at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

A forecourt is the single setting this is halted before the motor has run. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines together with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where your car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Cranking the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Gullane plus the areas next to it

The same journeys bring us to Rosebery Place, Saltcoats Steading, Archerfield The Village, New Mains and Archerfield the Village along with Gullane, which is a coastal village.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in East Lothian, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Call us to check rather than guessing — borders above all, and anywhere your phone might struggle with.

The ground the page covers sits on our map. All of it is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside stops across Gullane

Not everyone has a suitable spot to pull in. A common call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge on Hall Crescent or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you remain by the car or stand away from it hangs on whether sitting in it feels sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will take the van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the car that is much better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where the M8 matters, under 25 miles out of Gullane. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

Where is Gullane?

Gullane is a coastal village in East Lothian, situated approximately 15 miles east of Edinburgh, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Gullane sits at an elevation of around 31 metres, overlooking the Firth of Forth and the North Sea. Gullane has a population of around 1722 people, and is close to nearby places such as Rosebery Place and Archerfield The Village. Gullane is also near Saltcoats Steading, and is part of the wider East Lothian coastal area.

Once we arrive with you in Gullane: what happens

  • Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Our technicians rinse the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in the system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
  • Once it is turned on, our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Gullane?

Do not fire it up: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Gullane has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Gullane

We can't put one figure on this page truthfully, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Gullane

At a petrol station around Gullane, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more commonly than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the car turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Gullane and across East Lothian.
