Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hade Edge? Don't Start It
With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Hade Edge and the remainder of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. We can explain what the next move is. Phone — this comes ahead of everything else.
The next five steps: petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you never crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Dunford Road, turn those hazards on and keep it there.
- A van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting HD9 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how much, plus if your car has been run. Those answers decide whatever comes after.
Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through the high-pressure pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the drive back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over the Renault Megane at Brockholes while the work goes on, and our team would very much rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.
It will fire up. It will move off just fine. That is the trouble, because a diesel on a weakened tank runs normally while wearing down the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never risk the trip home from The Boshaw Trout — leave the Audi A4 and ring us.
Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the full process, and it explains the usual Village Park call: a diesel Dacia Duster that went out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.
Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — close to Hade Edge Village Hall or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.
No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven again before anyone calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting close to Huddersfield Sailing Club. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of an engine packing up. Switch off. Phone us.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Forecourts are where the work usually begins, and where a large portion of that closes. If you're still on the forecourt at Murco, that's normally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.
Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the only spot it gets spotted. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.
Push the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling the car four lengths does not warrant firing it.
Can our technicians serve your end of Hade Edge?
Arrunden, Washpit, Harden, Cartworth, Under Bank — every one of these on our trips that bring us across to Hade Edge as well, a village.
If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places in West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Contact us to enquire.
That map is the area this page covers. Your car never needs to come to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Broken down by the roadside in Hade Edge
Some people have no sensible spot to pull in whatsoever. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Bayfield Close since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.
Whether you wait by the motor or step away from it turns on whether being there is sensible. Do not restart the motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that is no problem for us.
Run it already? Pull in, then see this
This is where the local M62 comes in — under 10 miles from Hade Edge. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in the van.
Where's Hade Edge?
Hade Edge is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated near several lakes and reservoirs at an elevation of 324 metres. Hade Edge sits in a rural area surrounded by nearby places such as Arrunden, Washpit, and Harden. Hade Edge has a population of around 530 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.
What comes next when our technicians get to you around Hade Edge
- We establish what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- Our engineers empty your tank of all the polluted mixture.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- The motor is started and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
After that it is ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Hade Edge?
The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.
Both are ours. There's a separate Hade Edge page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Hade Edge
We can't put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Hade Edge
Fuel drains on a Hade Edge petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like The co-operative is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the system.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is the car still with you?
Keep the car switched off.
Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
