Petrol in Diesel

Hadley Wood: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Hadley Wood or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. One ring our way will be plenty: our engineers shall tell you what happens after this. Do that first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Do not crank it. Fired up regardless? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for several miles. People get that muddled. It isn't fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Crescent East? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Have your location ready before you ring. A postcode beginning EN4 0 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run. The answers decide whatever happens next.

Do not drive it home. The journey in has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Passat, and the trip back would about double it for no reason at all. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker. Our engineers don't need you hovering over the car outside the nearest station while our technicians get it done, and we'd very much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

The components that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and pulls away perfectly well. Chance the drive home from the pub in the village? Don't. Ring us and leave the Mercedes C-Class where it is.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us. Fine on the way out to Covert Way LNR, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel slips past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW 1 Series drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Our technicians flush the fuel lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already arrived at your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up by St Paul's Church a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Call us and leave it off.

What happens next is the issue. The motor straight away sucks the petrol left waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put fresh diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that suggestion is half right, because do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Saint Mary's, Hadley say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. We flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being repaired and your car only starting.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job mostly starts, and where a big portion of it closes. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you are still at Texaco that's usually where this drain takes place.

At a garage, the mistake is spotted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does that. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

Roll it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four bays does not justify cranking the engine.

Will our technicians serve your end of Hadley Wood?

Ganwick Corner, Barnet, Monken Hadley, New Barnet, Bentley Heath — all of those on our trips that carry us across to Hadley Wood itself, a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of places across Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Assuming is the thing to avoid, especially on the border or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Contact us to enquire.

That map shows the area this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers serve, and none of it requires the vehicle to move to us.

Stranded at the roadside in Hadley Wood

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge on Camlet Way or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Out of the vehicle when it isn't wise to wait in it, beside it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult spot, and that's no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, then see this

The local M25 is the one that counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Hadley Wood. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Get off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in the van.

Our visit around Hadley Wood, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • What is left in your system should not be what created the trouble, so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • When it is fired up, we confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Hadley Wood AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault under it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Hadley Wood page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Hadley Wood

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Hadley Wood drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Hadley Wood petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Often, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the car off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Do not switch the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
