Petrol in Diesel

Halcon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't fire up the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, throughout Halcon and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. A single ring to us will be enough: our team can tell you what comes after this. Make that right away.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And once started, don't believe it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so never put diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Bridgwater Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • A van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting TA1 2, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, about how many litres, and if the car has been started. Those responses determine everything that follows.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Taunton since breakfast? The day has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the journey in that pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Phone before you fetch it.

We will come out to you, drain your tank, flush those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Renault Clio around Halcon and you are stuck at Lidl with a boot loaded with shopping, phone — and never fire it up a second time to get out of the spot. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any of it, which is why such jobs are often the simple ones.

The parts that should be getting oiled are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Risk the trip home from The Hankridge Arms? Not a chance. Phone and leave the Audi A4 where it stands.

None of that is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Hamilton Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, the idle lumpy and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past gaps, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so strange places see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Newton Road Community Hall or not, and we'll come to the Peugeot 3008.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a fair share of that finishes. Still at BP? Then that is typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

The forecourt is the single location it gets caught before the engine has run. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Push it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Coverage in Halcon

Bathpool, Maidenbrook, Holway, Obridge, Ruishton — all of these on our trips that bring us over to Halcon as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most locations across Somerset, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours. Phone to enquire rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere your satnav tends to get wrong.

The ground the page includes sits on our map. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Halcon: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone has a suitable place to pull in. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge beside Roman Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Safe right there? Sit beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Don't fire it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into your fuel system. Our van driving to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it is far better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M5 comes in — under a mile from Halcon. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible exit and switch off. It alters what we bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Halcon?

Halcon is a suburban area in Somerset, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 17 metres. Halcon is located near several other local places, including Bathpool, Maidenbrook, and Holway, and is approximately 22 miles from the city of Wells. Halcon has a population of around 5116 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Halcon is also within commuting distance of larger cities, with London being around 132 miles away.

What happens when we arrive with you around Halcon

  • The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of the tank.
  • We flush the lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what started the issue.
  • Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Halcon?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Halcon page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Halcon pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Halcon drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Halcon, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let it stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
