Halfway: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never fire up your engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Halfway and the remainder of Carmarthenshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Phone before anything else happens, and you'll know what follows from there.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you don't start it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
- Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and our team would much rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on A4138, switch those hazards on and leave it there.
- The van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts SA14 9, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
- What got in, approximately how much, and if the motor has fired — the three replies determine your whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Renault Megane can sit outside Llanelli perfectly happily. Call from the platform if quicker; standing over us while our engineers work is not needed.
Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Penyfan Park, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.
Why we are firm about not driving on: the pump sits ahead of the injectors, so whatever a worn-out pump sheds moves on with the fuel. Leave the Peugeot 208 near St Michael and All Angels then ring us.
Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by TK Maxx or anywhere else, and don't restart the car to find a better place.
By this point that tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that made it near Marks & Spencer needs the circuit purged, not cleared.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel
It begins at the pump, generally. Quite often it finishes at one too. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere we work, and often.
Nowhere else other than a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the engine still cold. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Worth it. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.
Do we cover your end of Halfway?
Halfway is a residential suburb, and so our vans are out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same journeys: Coed Cae, Capel, Pemberton, Penallt and Trostre.
There are separate pages for the majority of towns across Carmarthenshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing about whether our engineers come. Near a boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone and check instead of presuming.
Use this map for the area shown here. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.
Roadside breakdowns around Halfway
Some people have no suitable place to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge on B4297, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Fine where you are? Wait with it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will send the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under 5 miles out of Halfway, your M4 is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit and switch off. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.
Halfway itself
Halfway is a coastal suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the city of Swansea and close to nearby places such as Coed Cae and Capel. Halfway has a population of around 3416 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Halfway sits at a low elevation of 14 metres above sea level, reflecting its coastal setting. Halfway is located approximately 9.3 miles from Swansea and 172.3 miles from London.
Once our technicians get to you in Halfway: what follows
- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Our technicians empty the tank of all the contaminated fuel.
- We rinse the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in the system isn't what started the trouble.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.
From that point, you are ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.
Halfway AdBlue removal is a different job
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't fire it up — but this problem is not. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Halfway page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Halfway?
One figure wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Halfway motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
At a petrol station around Halfway, can you do a fuel drain there?
A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
Do not switch the car back on.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers assume.
