Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Halifax?

With the tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Halifax and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One call to us is enough: our team can tell you what comes after this. Do it first.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the car. And once started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Southgate, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • The van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning HX1 1, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • Three details shape the full job: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure of it, and if it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel on a forecourt?

The job starts at a pump, mostly. Frequently the job wraps up on site as well. Still at Sainsbury's? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A forecourt is the only place the mistake gets spotted before the motor has started. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key.

Push it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Halifax

Our technicians will come to you, empty your tank, rinse the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into your diesel Ford Focus around Halifax and you are sat outside Heron Foods with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and never start the vehicle again to leave that spot. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls little diesel, which is why these are often the straightforward ones.

A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 on the zig-zags outside Beech Hill School is a hassle; the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through the filter and into your pump. Leave it, let people moan, and phone us.

What our technicians will ask is whether that drive there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and what does not burn can get past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked in the parking area by The Old Cock with a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades while it sits, so park it overnight then call us in the morning.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through, and petrol thins it. That's the full process, and it explains the normal Duffy's Park call: a diesel BMW 1 Series that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built round. None of that is the engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

Seldom the issue, the location. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and a narrow parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near Halifax Town A.F.C., is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Vauxhall Astra gets emptied, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

Areas our team cover near Halifax

These same runs take us to Stoney Royd, Claremount, Woodside, Akroydon and Bank Top besides Halifax, which is a riverside town.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns across West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Close to the border, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Ring us to enquire rather than assuming.

That map shows the area this page covers. Your car does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work over all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Halifax: stranded where you pulled up

A chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Corn Market or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Stay by the motor if it's sensible to wait inside, but out of it if it's not. Do not start up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the fuel system. We'll send the van to an inconvenient spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's far better than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and see below

The M62 is the one that matters now, and lies under 5 miles from Halifax. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Halifax

Halifax is a town situated in the eastern part of West Yorkshire, England, nestled near the Pennines. It has a riverside setting and is known for its historical significance in the textile industry. The town's past as a major centre for wool production is still evident in its architecture. Halifax serves as the administrative hub of the surrounding area.

What comes next when our technicians get to you in Halifax

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Our engineers empty that tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • We fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Halifax

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this fault underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Halifax has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Halifax

One number would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. If it's not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Halifax

Fuel drains on a Halifax petrol station forecourt

A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Our engineers visit Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more regularly than motorists fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

That engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than motorists assume.
