Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Halterworth? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Halterworth and the rest of Hampshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Just one ring to us will be enough: our technicians shall explain what happens after this. Try that first.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And if started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would rather travel to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Halterworth Lane, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting SO51 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been turned over. Those answers decide whatever comes after.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, left at Romsey since breakfast? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the journey in that sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Call us before you fetch the vehicle.

Diesel Peugeot 308. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Waitrose. That is the enquiry our engineers like, as the question beneath it is about volume through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

What our technicians will want to know is whether that run there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Audi A4 sitting in the parking area at Luzborough House carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens as it sits, and so park it there overnight then call us in the morning.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly no one knows how full that tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Mercedes A-Class near St Swithun's Church.

What occurs next is the problem. The engine straight away sucks the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, because do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Woodley Village Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the car just starting.

Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

A large share of this job gets finished at the pump, since that's where it usually kicks off. If you are still on the forecourt at Murco, that is typically where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

A forecourt is the single setting this can be halted before the engine has started. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Very much worth it. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Halterworth plus the villages next to it

Harefield, Whitenap, Crampmoor, Woodley, Cupernham — every one of them on our journeys that carry us over to Halterworth itself, a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns across Hampshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Call us and check instead of assuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere the satnav may misread.

The patch this page spans appears on our map. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car never needs to travel to us.

Stuck on the roadside near Halterworth

The chance to stop anywhere sensible does not come to everyone. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge of Saxon Way, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the vehicle when it's not safe to be inside, beside it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. A technician heading to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, and see below

Here is where the M27 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Halterworth. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in the van.

A bit about Halterworth

Halterworth is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Hampshire, with an elevation of around 37 metres. Halterworth lies approximately 6.6 miles from Southampton and 68.1 miles from London, forming part of the larger urban landscape. Halterworth has a population of around 3833 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Halterworth is near other local places such as Harefield, Whitenap, and Crampmoor.

Our job around Halterworth, step by step

  • The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • The tainted mixture comes from that tank.
  • We purge the lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it is fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Halterworth is a different matter

Never start it: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Halterworth page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Halterworth

One figure wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Halterworth drivers

I'm on a forecourt around Halterworth. Can you drain it on the spot?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement we attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more often than motorists fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. The pump still has to cope with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let it stay that way. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
