Petrol in Diesel

Halwill Junction: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Halwill Junction and the remainder of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Just one ring our way will be enough: our technicians shall explain what happens after this. Try it first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Do not fire it up — and never rely on it when it starts. This is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It's not all right. It is grinding that fuel system while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Station Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning EX21 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how much, plus whether the car has run. Those three details decide your whole visit.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning commute running on a fluid that had shed most of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Okehampton till the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a lot, which is why the question our engineers ask is about mileage instead of time. Phone. Keep the vehicle right where it sits.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a frantic morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in the Peugeot 308 seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Halwill Community Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

It will start. It will move off perfectly well. That is the problem, as a diesel on a weakened tank acts usually while wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't try the drive home from the pub in the village — leave the Audi A4 then ring us.

Your pump isn't turning, so whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Halwill Nature Reserve, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

Three things help when you ring from close to St Peter and St James: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, so the place itself is hardly ever the problem — we'd far rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Dacia Duster, change the fuel filter where there is a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the entire system, as by this point the worst of that is waiting in the fuel lines rather than in the tank.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A good share of the work is completed at a pump, since that is where it often starts. If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is generally where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

A forecourt is the single place this gets halted before the engine has run. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car sits.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the assistance. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Service in Halwill Junction

Halwill, Beaworthy, Stowford, Langaford, Landhill — each of them on the runs that carry us across to Halwill Junction itself, a village.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places across Devon have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Ring us and check rather than guessing, particularly when you're on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles with.

Look at this map for the ground covered here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians work on, and none of it asks the vehicle to come to us.

Halwill Junction: stuck where you pulled up

Not everybody gets a safe place to pull in. A normal call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Station Fields or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or move clear of it hangs on if sitting in it seems safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart the car to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. A technician heading to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then read below

This is where the M5 counts, under 50 miles away from Halwill Junction. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you around Halwill Junction

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • We drain your tank of the tainted mixture.
  • We clean your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what started the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Halwill Junction AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Halwill Junction has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Halwill Junction prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Halwill Junction

I'm on a forecourt in Halwill Junction. Can you drain the car here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Regularly, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable far more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no. The pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with the vehicle?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
