Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hampton Park?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Hampton Park and the rest of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Ring us so we shall tell you what follows from here before you attempt much else.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And having started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those components.
- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Apostle Way, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
- Get your location prepared before you dial. A postcode starting SP1 3 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
- Three replies shape your whole call-out: the stuff you poured in, the rough amount of it, plus if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a fair portion of that ends. Still at BP? Then that is typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.
Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets spotted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car is.
The staff will usually happily push the vehicle out from the pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Firing the car just to move four car lengths isn't.
Service in Hampton Park
Hampton Park is a residential suburb, and so our technicians get out to the town and to the villages by it on those same runs: Ford, Bishopdown, Old Sarum, Laverstock and Wyndham Park.
If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of places across Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Call us and enquire rather than assuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your phone may struggle with.
This map is the ground the page includes. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the car never needs to move to us.
Someone will advise you to move it out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. A misfuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags at Greentrees Primary School is a nuisance; the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let them grumble, then ring us.
A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the car park by Hampton Inn carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till somebody takes it home. Park it there overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing degrades whilst it waits. What we'll ask is if that run there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that does not burn can work past the rings and into the engine oil.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Castle Hill Country Park in that diesel Audi A6 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of that.
Your pump sits ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a worn one gives off moves downstream with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Ford Kuga where it's by Fastness.
Turn off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — close to Bishopdown Evangelical Church or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 208 telling you what's wrong.
Hampton Park: stranded wherever you stopped
Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere sensible. A routine call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge on Pearce Way or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.
Out of the car if it isn't wise to be inside, with it when it is. Do not restart it to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. We'll take the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's far better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone
This is where your M27 comes in, under 15 miles out of Hampton Park. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.
Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe junction and turn off. It affects what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
A bit about Hampton Park
Hampton Park is a suburban area located on the riverside in Wiltshire, with a mix of housing types but predominantly detached homes. Hampton Park sits near the city of Salisbury, approximately 1.6 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Ford and Bishopdown. Hampton Park is situated at an elevation of around 70 metres, in a region known for its scenic riverside settings. Hampton Park is also within commuting distance to London, being around 77 miles away.
What we do when our technicians reach you in Hampton Park
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
- The polluted mixture is drawn out of the tank.
- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
- The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- Your engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
From there, you are ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
Hampton Park AdBlue removal is a different matter
The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Hampton Park page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Hampton Park prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
One price would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank can hold.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Hampton Park
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Hampton Park?
Yes, and it is where a big share of this work happens. Our technicians attend Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.
Still with the car?
Leave the car turned off.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people expect.
