Petrol in Diesel

Harton Nook: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the motor. If the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Harton Nook and the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us before everything else happens, and you'll see what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you never fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Grosvenor Gardens? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts NE34 6 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has started. Those three replies shape the whole job.

The drive in is what drew thinned diesel through the pump. Sitting still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside East Boldon all day, sits dormant in the tank whilst it waits. Phone first — before your keys turn.

A diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the parking area by Harley’s Bar holding a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park the vehicle there overnight then call us next morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it stands. What our technicians will ask is whether that run there was brief and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Cleadon Park in that diesel BMW 5 Series is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of that.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by Cleadon Park Library a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us and leave it off. The short drive really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has arrived at the filter and the pump — which is why our engineers clean the lines instead of only draining the tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a car collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Ford Kuga by St Margaret's.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Harton Nook

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair share of this job is finished at the pump, since that is where it mostly starts. Still at Gulf? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere except a garage can the mistake be stopped with your engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth doing. Shifting the car four spaces does not justify starting the motor.

Service around Harton Nook

Harton, Cleadon Park, Cauldwell, Horsley Hill, Whiteleas — every one of these on our trips that bring us across to Harton Nook itself, a residential suburb.

There are pages for most towns across Tyne and Wear, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing about if our engineers come. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Ring us to enquire instead of presuming.

The patch this page covers appears on this map. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't move your vehicle anywhere.

Harton Nook: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, landed along the verge of The High Road or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Clear of the motor when it is not sensible to wait there, with it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the A194(M) comes in, under 5 miles away from Harton Nook. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the next safe junction and switch off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

Where is Harton Nook?

Harton Nook is a suburban area located on the coast of Tyne and Wear, situated near the city of Sunderland. Harton Nook sits at an elevation of 31 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Harton Nook is close to nearby places such as Harton and Cleadon Park, and is approximately 245 miles north of London.

What happens when we reach you around Harton Nook

  • We check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Harton Nook?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the issue beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Harton Nook page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Harton Nook

One price wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Harton Nook

I am on a forecourt around Harton Nook. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. We visit Murco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more commonly than people assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the car?

Turned off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers fear.
