Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hatton?

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, across Hatton and the rest of Aberdeenshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. One ring to us is enough: our technicians shall show you what happens after this. Try that right away.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start it. And having started, don't believe it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would sooner drive to an odd place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Station Road, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • Before you call, gather your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning AB42 0 — that is what determines whether the van arrives or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has run. These three facts decide your whole visit.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a forecourt, meaning a fair part of it gets done there. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is generally where the drain gets done.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one location it ends up spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Hatton

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the phone call our technicians like goes like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off at Tesco.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a hurried morning run needs plenty — so three miles in the Mercedes E-Class seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

It will fire up. It will pull away perfectly well. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually whilst wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't risk the trip home from Hatton Mill (closed) — leave the BMW 5 Series then ring us.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and call us. Happy on the way out to Fairy Hillock, flat on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Ford Kuga drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Kia Sportage close to Hatton Village Hall.

Hatton and the places beside it

As a coastal village, Hatton gets a regular visit, whilst its neighbours round about go along on the same journey: Chapel Hill and Aldie, Easterton of Auchleuchries and Cruden Bay, Port Erroll.

Our engineers do come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Aberdeenshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the mistake to skip, especially on the border or anywhere your phone gets lost. Call us and enquire.

The map shows the patch the page spans. Your car does not need to move to us. We work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hatton: stranded wherever you pulled up

Some people have no safe place to pull in at all. If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge of Hatton Farm Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Okay right there? Stay by it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Never start up the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved

over 50 miles out of Hatton, the local M90 is what matters here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Hatton itself

Hatton is a small village in Aberdeenshire, situated on the coast of Scotland at an elevation of 41 metres. Hatton lies approximately 20 miles north of Aberdeen and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Hatton is part of a wider network of rural communities in the area, including nearby Chapel Hill and Aldie. Hatton has a population of around 807 residents.

Once our engineers get to you in Hatton: what happens

  • The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Your tank gets cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • The engine is turned on and checked to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hatton is a different matter

Never crank it: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Hatton has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Hatton?

One figure would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Hatton motorists

I'm on a forecourt around Hatton. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
