Havercroft: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Havercroft and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our technicians will explain what your next part will be. Phone — this comes ahead of everything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you never fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so do not add diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on West Street? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An odd place suits us better than a started motor.
- Keep your location prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning WF4 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
- Three replies settle the full visit: the stuff you put in, the rough quantity involved, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
A fair share of the job is done at the pump, since that is where it often starts. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.
The forecourt is the single location this can be halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle stands.
The attendants will usually offer to move the vehicle out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.
Havercroft plus the villages next to it
Newstead, Ryhill, South Hiendley, Wintersett, Felkirk — all of these on our trips that bring us over to Havercroft itself, a rural village.
There are separate pages for most locations in West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing about whether we come. Guessing is the thing to avoid, particularly on the boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles. Call us and check.
The ground this page includes sits on our map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our engineers serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to travel to us.
Havercroft: stranded wherever you parked
A chance to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Cow Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.
Whether you stay beside the car or step clear of it rests on if sitting in it feels sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. A technician coming to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than pressing on.
It will fire up. It will move off perfectly well. That's the issue, since a diesel on a diluted tank runs normally whilst wearing the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not chance the drive home from Havercroft Sports & Social Club — leave the BMW 3 Series then call us.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Peugeot 3008 went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how the trip to Willow Garth went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.
We flush the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already arrived at the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes A-Class parked up close to Havercroft & Rhyhill Sports & Youth Centre a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave it off.
Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, close to St James or anywhere else, and never restart the vehicle to find a better place.
Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the confident advice you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Audi Q5 close to St Paul's Methodist Church and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
The local M1 is the road which matters now, and it sits under 10 miles from Havercroft. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.
Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.
Where's Havercroft?
Havercroft is a village in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 5.6 miles from Wakefield and 155.7 miles from London, at an elevation of around 82 metres. Havercroft lies near the villages of Newstead, Ryhill, and South Hiendley, and is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Havercroft has a population of around 2198 residents, making it a small but distinct community in the region.
What follows when our engineers reach you around Havercroft
- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
- Our technicians drain your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
- What is left in your system should not be what caused the trouble, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
- After it's fired up, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
Havercroft AdBlue removal is a different job
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the problem beneath it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.
We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Havercroft has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.
Havercroft costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What shifts it:
- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Havercroft
I am on a forecourt in Havercroft. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more often than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and the car, still together?
The engine stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. This is recoverable from much more regularly than people assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
