Hawks Green: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Whatever you do, don't switch your engine on, even for a moment, to move it. Pause; leave it off. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing settles that more than the next few minutes do. From now on, in order, for anywhere in Hawks Green:
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off
In this order, and before anything else:
- Pull the keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the system, pulling petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it harms, and so keep it alone wholly.
- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.
- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.
- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the pump. Do not start the vehicle to move it, however short the way.
- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and your receipt shows both. Hold on to it.
Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M6 Toll at the next exit if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Hawks Green, and pull over somewhere sensible and not pressing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.
Every Hawks Green fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?
What happens after this rests on one answer, and only one.
If your engine has not run at all:
- No place but your tank: that's where that petrol yet is.
- Usually it is drained and cleaned right where the car is.
- This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of step one.
Run at all, however briefly:
- Out of your tank, through the fuel filter, into your lines: that is how far the petrol has got.
- A longer run takes it all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
- Mileage is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.
Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your high-pressure pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line falls where it does. In that tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. The parts that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Hawks Green: what our technicians need
Whether the technician goes round or finds you comes down to a little planning.
- Your whereabouts: a postcode starting WS11 7 serves best.
- Give the road — Hemlock Way or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one outside Tesco, and it's easy.
- The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Hawks Green page.
- The amount: your receipt's litres, or else how long you had the nozzle in.
- Whether it's run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.
- Settle who owns your car ahead of when our technicians arrive: some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that is quicker beforehand.
Ring 0333 366 0103 once you have got that ready — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .
Hawks Green fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
Help, however well meant, is what does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.
- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.
- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.
- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains where it is anyway.
- Even the radio or the windows are not worth turning your ignition on for.
When our van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step
- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those answers decide the job, and that is why you get a quote after them instead of before.
- Out of that tank comes the contaminated blend: that tank is drained.
- Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank travels in the fuel lines if it ran, and the lines are purged to clear it.
- Your filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where the car has a workable one.
- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.
- Starting the car. Once the system is bled with new diesel, we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly.
The vehicle has fresh diesel running through it before we head off. It is very rare for a vehicle noticed early to be left with long-term damage, and normal driving resumes right away.
Once your fuel drain is done: driving in Hawks Green once more
- Drive normally. There is nothing special to do once it's been started on clean fuel.
- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop then call us again.
- The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.
- Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
