Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Haydock?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Haydock and the rest of Merseyside. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Our team can explain what the next step will be. Call us — this happens before everything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you don't crank it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Our team would sooner drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Cooper Lane, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Get your position prepared before you call. A postcode that starts WA11 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, about how many litres, and whether the car has been turned over. Those answers decide everything that follows.

The drive back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf. So keep it where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle at Garswood whilst our engineers get on, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

Nothing tells you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Grange Valley Primary School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump works without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Try the trip home from The Owls Nest? No. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank runs generally whilst grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Audi A4 then ring us.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump sits upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn pump loses moves onward with the fuel. Leave the Peugeot 3008 close to St Mark and call us.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position usually get driven a second time before somebody rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel BMW X1 is now waiting by Wood Pit Disaster Memorial. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of an engine failing. Switch off. Ring us.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A good chunk of this job is completed at a pump, since that is where it mostly kicks off. The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the owner's agreement, that's somewhere our engineers work, and often.

A forecourt is the one location this is halted before your motor has started. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car sits.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth doing. Starting the car just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Parts our team serve near Haydock

Haydock is a town, so our technicians head out to it and to the areas by it on the same runs: North Florida, New Boston, Pewfall, Blackbrook and Stanley Bank.

We do come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations around Merseyside, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Ring us to ask rather than presuming, especially if you're on a border or somewhere your phone gets wrong.

See the map for the patch shown on this page. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere around Haydock?

Some drivers get no sensible place to pull in at all. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside O'Connell Close because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Stay by your car if it is wise to wait in it, and clear of the vehicle if it's not. Do not restart your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system. Our van driving to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where the M6 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Haydock. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and turn off. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

A little about Haydock

Haydock is a town in Merseyside, situated inland at an elevation of around 45 metres, approximately 13 miles from Liverpool. Haydock has a population of around 13296 people, with a predominance of semi-detached housing. Haydock is located near several other communities, including North Florida, New Boston, and Pewfall, and is about 172 miles northwest of London.

Our job in Haydock, step by step

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away comes the polluted fuel.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the problem, and so your fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.

From there, you're ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Haydock

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Haydock has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Haydock?

What changes the figure is listed below, because this job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel queries from Haydock drivers

I'm on a forecourt around Haydock. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit Asda and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct problem. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Keep the car turned off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
