Petrol in Diesel

Headingley Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Headingley Hill or the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring to us is sufficient: we will tell you what comes from here. Try that straight away.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And once started, don't depend on it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Buckingham Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky location suits us better than a started motor.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode beginning LS6 2 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has been turned over. Your replies decide whatever happens next.

Never take it home. The drive in has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Tiguan, and the journey back would roughly double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car outside Burley Park while our technicians get it done, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

If you've put petrol in your diesel BMW 3 Series in Headingley Hill and you are now stranded outside Continental Supermarket with a boot full of shopping, phone. Do not start it once more to exit that space. We will get to you, empty the tank, rinse those fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little diesel, which is why these are often the simple jobs.

You will be told to move it out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags outside Spring Bank Primary School, a misfuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol through the filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Ring us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked near Headingley Hill Congregational Church. For a diesel Vauxhall Astra whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get cleaned and not just that tank emptied.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Kia Sportage close to James Baillie Common Room. You will not know how full that tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. We ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Headingley Hill

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Much of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a good chunk of it gets finished there. If you are still at the forecourt at BP, that's normally where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

A forecourt is the single setting it gets stopped before the motor has started. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Worth doing. Starting it for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Headingley Hill plus the villages beside it

Being a residential suburb, Headingley Hill has a regular call, while its neighbours close by come along on that same run: Woodhouse Cliff and Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse, Miles Hill.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most places around West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Assuming is the mistake to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Ring us to ask.

The patch the page spans sits on this map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our engineers serve, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

Stuck on the kerbside in Headingley Hill

Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop anywhere safe. A common call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge of North Grange Mews or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Safe there? Stay with it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

This is where your Inner Ring Road comes into it — under 3 miles from Headingley Hill. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

Headingley Hill itself

Headingley Hill is a suburban area situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Headingley Hill sits close to the city centre of Leeds, approximately 1.4 miles away, and is near other local areas such as Woodhouse Cliff and Headingley. Headingley Hill has a population of around 15549 people and is located at an elevation of 101 metres. Headingley Hill is part of the larger Leeds urban area, which is around 170.6 miles from London.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Headingley Hill

  • The answers change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • Your tank gets cleared of it.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that created the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

That has the car ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Headingley Hill is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — don't crank it — but the fault is not. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Headingley Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Headingley Hill

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Headingley Hill

Fuel drains on a Headingley Hill petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Jet, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than people expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Keep the engine switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
