Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Heamoor? Don't Start It
Never start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, across Heamoor and the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. One call to us will be plenty: we can show you what follows after this. Do this right away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Never fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually cannot run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- Don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Mythyon Court? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.
- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning TR18 3 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
- What went in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has run — those three facts determine the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Quarter past eight. A hurried fill-up on the way in. At about eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has stood outside Penzance for three hours. Phone then leave the car where it stands. What is key is the drive in, as diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates the pump and your injectors, but petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles ran the pump on a fluid drained of most of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys be until we arrive.
Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at light throttle uses hardly any fuel. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere around Heamoor, a boot packed with shopping, and you sat at Costcutter — phone us. Leaving the space is not worth another start. That tank gets cleared where it sits, your fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and you head home.
How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Pensans Community Primary School — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.
Stop somewhere sensible, switch off and call us. Normal on the way out to Heamoor Old School Field, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Nissan Qashqai drove, the less of that pressure it held.
About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Focus parked by Wesley Rock scarcely two streets on. Phone us, then leave it off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank.
Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt
Pumps are where this job often kicks off, and where a big part of it finishes. The drain generally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's agreement, that is somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.
Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one location this gets stopped. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.
Staff will normally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the assistance. Firing the car for four car lengths? Don't.
Do our technicians cover your end of Heamoor?
Being a residential suburb, Heamoor sees a frequent call, and the places close by go with it on that same journey: Treneere and Penzance, Alverton and Madron, Trythogga.
There are separate pages for the majority of locations around Cornwall, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing about if we come. Ring us and enquire instead of presuming — borders especially, and wherever your satnav tends to struggle with.
The area the page spans is on the map. The car does not need to move to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stopped at the roadside somewhere in Heamoor?
The opportunity to stop anywhere safe does not come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge of Sonamerg Close, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.
Safe there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward place, and that's no trouble for us.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
The local M5 is the one which matters now, and it runs over 50 miles from Heamoor. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Long trip? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.
A little about Heamoor
Heamoor is a suburban area in Cornwall, situated near the coast and approximately 60 metres above sea level. Heamoor lies within the wider Penzance area, close to nearby places such as Treneere and Alverton. Heamoor has a population of around 4323 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Heamoor is also relatively distant from London, at around 255 miles away, but is closer to the city of Truro, which is about 24 miles away.
What we do when our technicians reach you around Heamoor
- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- That tank is cleared of it.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.
That leaves the car ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Heamoor?
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never start it — yet this problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Heamoor page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Heamoor pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What moves the price is listed below, as this job is not one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single number on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel questions from Heamoor motorists
I'm on a forecourt in Heamoor. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Yes, and it's where a good part of this work takes place. Regularly, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Still with your car?
Shut off is how it stays.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
