Heath and Reach: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Not for a moment, and not to move it: the engine stays off. Pause there. Drained then rinsed, just where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else. From now on, in order, wherever you are around Heath and Reach:
Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one
In this sequence, and before everything else:
- The keys out of the ignition. Turning your ignition on can be all it takes to prime your fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the parts it damages. Keep the car off altogether.
- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only makes you with extra of the same mixture.
- Hazards on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make your car simple to see before you do anything else.
- The staff will usually help you push it away from the petrol pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — never under the motor, even for a few yards.
- Keep your receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are printed on it, and they are what our technicians ask for first.
If you were still driving when you noticed, pull over somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M1, under 10 miles from Heath and Reach, that means the next junction. Stage one follows.
Heath and Reach fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?
From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.
If it has not once been started:
- Nowhere but your tank: that's where that petrol yet is.
- Usually it's emptied and cleaned just where the vehicle stands.
- This is the best case — which is the whole point of step one.
If it has been started, even for a moment:
- From the tank, through the fuel filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far the petrol has travelled.
- Run it farther and the petrol reaches your injectors, having passed through the pump first.
- The farther it went, the bigger the job — your lines, your filter, and sometimes more besides.
The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.
What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Heath and Reach
A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a van that goes round.
- LU7 0 plus the rest of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.
- Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Sheepcote Crescent or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
- Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, like the one at Tesco.
- Make and model of the vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Heath and Reach page.
- The amount: your receipt's litres, or else how long you held the nozzle in.
- If it's run, how far plus how hard — as well as whether it's run at all.
- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before we arrive is faster than afterwards.
Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to works too if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.
Heath and Reach fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
In the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these count.
- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere dangerous? Get clear of the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it stands? Stay with it.
- A kind passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or moving it a couple of yards.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.
- Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains where it is all the same.
- Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.
Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time
- Three questions. What got in, how much, and whether it's run. Those replies shape this job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.
- Next your tank is cleared, so the tainted fuel comes out.
- Flushing the fuel lines comes next, because a vehicle that ran has petrol past that tank, in your lines themselves.
- Where the car has a workable filter, it's swapped; if not, cleared.
- Clean diesel goes in, and your system is primed.
- The start-up. With fresh diesel in and the system bled, it's fired up and tested to be sure it runs correctly.
Only when it's running on clean diesel do our engineers go. It's very unusual for a car spotted quickly to be left with permanent damage, and normal use starts again at once.
After your fuel drain: back on the road in Heath and Reach
- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — usual driving will do.
- Pull over and call us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.
- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.
- Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
