Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Helmshore

Never turn on the engine. While the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Helmshore and the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us and then our engineers shall show you what happens after that before you try much else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Don't crank it. Started anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that muddled. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Helmshore Road, switch the hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Before you phone, work out your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts BB4 4 — that's what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has been turned over. The answers decide all that comes after.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning commute working on a fluid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at Entwistle till the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the thing our engineers ask is about miles rather than time. Phone. Keep it just where it is.

The phone call we want sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside Tesco. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car waits, as a diesel Citroen C3 left outside Rossendale Golf Club is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Dacia Sandero close to St Thomas' Church Hall. You will not know how full that tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there anyway. We ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain it and put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Corsa near Haslingden Sports Centre and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through your pump once more. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Call us. Your circuit gets flushed, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired car from one that merely starts.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Helmshore

Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

The job begins at a forecourt, usually. Frequently the work finishes at one as well. The drain normally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it is spotted with your motor never fired, and no place else does that. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths does not justify starting it.

Helmshore plus the places next to it

Flax Moss, Helmcroft, Syke Side, Waterfoot, Ewood Bridge — all of those on the rounds that take us across to Helmshore itself, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for most locations around Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Close to a border, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Contact us and enquire rather than assuming.

The map outlines the patch the page spans. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Stranded on the kerb somewhere around Helmshore?

Not everybody gets a suitable spot to pull in. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Broadway because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Remain beside the car if it's sensible to wait inside, and out of the vehicle if it's not. Do not start it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the fuel system. A technician driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M66 matters, under 3 miles out of Helmshore. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

Where's Helmshore?

Helmshore is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 201 metres. Helmshore has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by detached homes. Helmshore is located near several other small places, including Flax Moss, Helmcroft, and Syke Side, and is approximately 14.5 miles from the city of Salford. Helmshore is a relatively small community, with a population of around 4964 people.

What we do when our technicians reach you around Helmshore

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our technicians empty that tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the system isn't what created the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Helmshore AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this issue beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Helmshore has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Helmshore costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians can't put one price on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Helmshore

I'm on a forecourt in Helmshore. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

The engine remains off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
