Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hengoed? Don't Start It

Never turn on the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Hengoed and the remainder of Caerphilly, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us and we shall tell you what comes after that before you try any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Do not fire it up — and never depend on it when it fires up. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It is not all right. It's wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would rather get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Acacia Avenue, that means hazards on and leave it.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning CF82 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
  • Three details determine the entire job: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure involved, plus if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf outside the nearest station whilst the work gets done, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle uses little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere in Hengoed, a boot full of shopping, and you sat at Tesco — phone us. Leaving the spot isn't worth another start. The tank gets drained where it stands, your fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and you drive home.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Maesycwmmer Primary Ground, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the car home to buy any.

Leave the Dacia Duster by Hengoed Wool Mill and call us. We're blunt about not driving on because a worn-out pump loses, and what it loses passes on with your fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take the filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident tip you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel BMW 1 Series by Sue Noake Leisure Centre and it'll start, which is precisely why the tip sounds plausible. Then your engine pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A big part of the work ends up finished at a forecourt, since that's where it usually kicks off. Still at Petrol? Then that is normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

The forecourt is the single location the mistake can be halted before your motor has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the offer. Starting the car just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Areas our team reach in Hengoed

The same trips get us to Cefn Hengoed, Maesycwmmer, Ystrad Mynach, Tredomen and Parc Penallta Country Park as well as Hengoed, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of towns in Caerphilly, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about whether we come. Ring us to ask instead of guessing, especially if you're on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles with.

See this map for the ground included on this page. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car does not need to move to us.

Hengoed: stuck where you parked

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull in. A routine call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge on Heol Uchaf or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Sit by your car if it is sensible to sit in it, and clear of the vehicle if it isn't. Don't fire it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the system. Driving on does your car far more harm than a van coming out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M4 is the road which counts now, and it lies under 10 miles from Hengoed. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Where's Hengoed?

Hengoed is a suburban area in Caerphilly, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 185 metres. Hengoed lies near the communities of Cefn Hengoed, Maesycwmmer, and Ystrad Mynach, and is approximately 10.9 miles from Newport. Hengoed is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development of the region.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Hengoed

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hengoed is a distinct problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault underneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Hengoed page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Hengoed?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Hengoed drivers

At a petrol station around Hengoed, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the car off. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more frequently than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect.
