Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Henleaze? Don't Start It
With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Henleaze and the rest of Bristol, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Just one ring our way is sufficient: we will show you what comes next. Make that right away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- While you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you do not crank it, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
- Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather come to an odd spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Kellaway Avenue, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.
- Get your location ready before you call. A postcode starting BS6 7 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, roughly how much, plus whether your car has been turned over. Your answers shape everything that follows.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel
Pumps are where the job often kicks off, and where a fair portion of it ends. Still at Shell? Then that's normally where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.
No place except a garage can it be stopped with your motor still unrun. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Well worth doing. Firing the car to shift four vehicle lengths is not.
Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Tesco, somewhere in Henleaze? Then call us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to leave that space. A technician gets to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, and so these tend to be the straightforward ones.
The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and pulls away perfectly well. Risk the drive home from The Gloucester Old Spot? Not a chance. Phone then leave the Mercedes E-Class where it sits.
Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us. Normal on the way out to RGS Bristol Sports Ground, flat on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; runnier fuel slips past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Vauxhall Astra travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left by The Ardagh. For a diesel Audi A6 whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, and let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the BMW X1 by Church Of The Good Shepherd.
Coverage near Henleaze
Henleaze is a residential suburb, so our vans head out to the town and to the places near it on those same trips: Westbury Park, Bishopston, Ashley Down, Horfield and Redland.
Our technicians still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations in Bristol, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Contact us to enquire rather than presuming, particularly if you're on a boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.
The map is the patch the page includes. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.
Stopped at the kerb anywhere in Henleaze?
Some drivers have no suitable place to pull in at all. Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge beside Longmead Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Fine there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. A technician heading to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved
This is where your M32 counts, under 3 miles out of Henleaze. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.
Where's Henleaze?
Henleaze is a suburban area located in the north of Bristol, situated approximately 2.2 miles from the city centre. Henleaze sits at an elevation of around 80 metres, and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock. Henleaze is bordered by nearby places such as Westbury Park, Bishopston, and Ashley Down, and is home to a population of around 8339 people. Henleaze is also relatively close to major transport links, being around 106 miles from London.
Once we arrive with you around Henleaze: what follows
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
- We clear your tank of the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- Once it's started, our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel.
That has your car ready to set off. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and as everything is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Henleaze
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the problem beneath it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.
Both are ours. There's a separate Henleaze page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Henleaze
Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank can hold.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.
Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Henleaze motorists
I'm on a forecourt in Henleaze. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Esso and the other forecourts locally regularly.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Switched off is the way the car remains.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
