Petrol in a Diesel Car in Henley

Don't start the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, throughout Henley and the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers can show you what the following stage will be. Call us — that comes before all else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cathole Bridge Road, anywhere — an awkward spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts TA18 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has started. These three answers decide your whole job.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of the work begins at the pump, so a big portion of that gets finished there. The drain generally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Valero? Given the owner's permission, that's a spot we work, and often.

The forecourt is the single spot the mistake can be halted before the engine has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Well worth it. Cranking it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Henley

The call our engineers like sounds like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at Waitrose. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

Somebody will tell you to move it out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Maiden Beech Academy is an inconvenience; the same motor fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past your filter then into your pump. Leave it there, let everyone moan, and give us a call.

It will start. It will pull away quite happily. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a thinned tank behaves normally while wearing the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't try the journey home from the pub in the village — leave the Audi A4 then ring us.

Our engineers flush the fuel lines rather than only emptying the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up close to Saint Leonard a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 1 Series, a fill-up close to Misterton Village Hall that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

Parts our team cover around Henley

Henley is a rural hamlet, and so our team head out to it and to the places around it on the usual trips: Misterton, Hewish, Seaborough, Crewkerne and Roundham.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Somerset have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Call us and check rather than assuming.

That map shows the patch the page spans. The lot is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Henley: stuck where you parked

Some people get no sensible spot to pull over at all. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge beside Lang Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Okay right there? Remain with it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. Do not start it up to get to a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, and see below

under 25 miles from Henley, the local M5 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't start it to reposition. On a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

About Henley

Henley is a small hamlet in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 137 metres, and is located near the villages of Misterton and Hewish. Henley lies approximately 24 miles from the city of Wells and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Henley is a relatively small community, with a population of around 565 residents, and is part of the wider rural landscape of the South West region. Henley is also some distance from major urban centres, being around 124 miles from London.

What we do when our technicians reach you in Henley

  • We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
  • That tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Our technicians clean your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what caused the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Henley AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Henley page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Henley?

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Henley

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Henley?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work happens. We visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the car off. It's fixable far more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Do not switch it on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
