Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Heysham?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Heysham and the remainder of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One call to us is sufficient: our technicians can tell you what comes next. Try this first.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • Don't water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We'd much rather come to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Heysham Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts LA3 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, about how much, and if the engine has been started. Your responses shape whatever happens next.

Never drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the high-pressure pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Passat at Heysham Port whilst the work goes on, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Car parks like the one outside Co-op Food are a place we visit regularly, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that determines if a van can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. When we can't work alongside the diesel BMW 3 Series we'll shift it without firing it — and that isn't fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Any start primes the fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of the tank and on to the pump, so a car moved twice into a roomier bay has silently turned into a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

Your pump isn't turning, so whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to Heysham Eco Coastal and Sensory Garden, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. New spots see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to Church of the Nazarene without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and miles determines how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

Your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C3 that made it near St James needs the circuit purged instead of drained.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a big chunk of it closes. The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's permission, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.

A filling station is the one spot the mistake is spotted before your motor has run. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth it. Cranking it over four vehicle lengths? No.

Do our technicians cover your corner of Heysham?

As a coastal town, Heysham sees a routine visit, and the areas round about come with it on that same round: Lower Heysham and Higher Heysham, Sandylands and West End, Heaton.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of locations around Lancashire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Near a boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Ring us and enquire instead of guessing.

The area the page includes sits on our map. Your car does not need to come to us. We operate throughout every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the kerb somewhere around Heysham?

Not everyone has a decent spot to stop. A normal call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge on Sugham Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Safe where you are? Sit with it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Driving on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where your M6 comes into it — under 5 miles away from Heysham. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off. Long drive? Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

A little about Heysham

Heysham is a coastal town in Lancashire, situated near the city of Lancaster and overlooking Morecambe Bay. Heysham has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and its elevation is around 26 metres above sea level. Heysham is close to several nearby places, including Lower Heysham, Higher Heysham, and Sandylands, and is about 210 miles northwest of London.

Once we reach you in Heysham: what follows

  • We find out what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • We clean your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Heysham?

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Heysham page. Both are ours to handle.

Heysham prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Heysham drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Heysham?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
